finally came out in wide release recently after a few weeks being in limited release.  I’ve been waiting so long to see it that a buddy of mine and I made sure that we set time during the afternoon to catch it.  It’s something we’ve been talking about seeing for some time.  We are both obsessed with the Springsteen song that goes with it.  And have really been building up the suspense after it received so much great accolades from the critics, press, and nominations.

We went to see the movie, and it lived up to everything I wanted it to be.  I did a snap video review of the movie if you would like to hear more about it.  The only problem was that I was so incredibly sick when I went to go see the movie.  I was so bothered by my ongoing cold that it actually took away from some of the movie experience.  Even though I loved it, I felt myself concentrating more on my cold at times than the movie itself.  My nose was stuffed like a spicy sausage to the point where I couldn’t breathe, was forced to try to quietly sniffle my way around.  My throat was bothering me to the point where I was coughing into my sleeve.  It was like a lightening and thunder collaboration between my coughs and sniffles.  I would cough twice, then sniffle, on and repeat.

At one point during the movie, I actually had to get up and leave for a few minutes just to blow my nose and drink some water.  I decided it was either that or completely ruin it for everyone else in the theater, and I didn’t want to be the hated guy.  Already was giving the people next to me and in front of me pneumonia.  It was the first time that I could remember where my state of mind was really affected during a movie I loved because of something like this.  If it was a DVD it wouldn’t matter at all, or even a comedy.  But a dark and incredibly well performed movie like this, it just seemed to hurt a little bit.  I almost felt like I couldn’t fully enjoy this great movie, and I lost a bit of the experience.  Actually kind of upset me a bit.  It would be the equivalent to playing Pebble Beach for the first time, and having your first drive be hooked because your knees were bothering you from earlier in the week.  You would want your mulligan.

The Grain That Built a Hemisphere dvd Has anyone else lost a bit of a movie experience because of a cold?  What are some of your stories?

  1. Great film, I’m sorry to hear a cold lessened the experience. Although, it was admirable to step out, cause there is nothing worse than sitting next to someone who sniffs, sneezes and coughs their way through a movie.

I suggest seeing the film again on DVD, hopefully then you might get the proper experience. Mind you, it’s not a film made for repeat viewings in my opinion.

  2. @Anders It was strange, I was looking forward to the movie for months, even more so because I am a huge Springsteen fan and love the song, listened to it way before the movie came out. Got me excited. It got to the point where I honestly didn’t want to be “that guy” and had to leave. I def will be seeing it again on DVD, but like you mention, not really a repeat movie, can’t get the same emotional feel or “goosebump” factor as I call it on a repeat. Thanks for stopping by, look forward to hearing from you again.
