That was one role that if you put any other actor in it, it would have been an average movie, he made it great. Can't say that about too many scenes, that role will forever be him and his identity. Wouldn't call it an upset, Penn was the favorite and clearly the Academy likes him over Rourke. I think Rourke deserves in and want him to win. The academy doesn't like him though, so its a tough call. Milk was a great film, not Van Sant's best, but easily the most accessible in a long while. But you're right, I think Sean Penn's performance was not as impressive as Rourke's.
