I think of it more on the line that 20 yrs down the road, you will remember Rourke as the Ram more so over Penn as Milk. To me that is more iconic and rememorable. Without jumping too deep into it, Sean had to play a gay man, much harder to do when you are the complete opposite of a gay man. Mickey played a man struggling with his own problems trying to get back to the top. This is Mickey's life in a nut shell. It wouldn't have been that much of a stretch for him to bleed for this role, he had help from his own life.
