Netflix Bumped Up Costs to Rent Blu-Ray

I just received this email earlier today from Netflix how they are increasing their blu-ray titles and because they are more expensive, they are charging their customers more money. Makes sense and I can’t blame them for that, but still sucks. Jacking my fee up to $11.21 for one DVD unlimited for the month. Between the 6-8 I can rent a month, still a bargain for me. Give it a few months and they’ll be jacking it up again.
What do you think about the price increase?
Here’s the letter from Netflix.
Dear Craig,
You are receiving this email because you added unlimited Blu-ray access to your account for $1 a month. The number of Blu-ray titles has increased significantly and will continue to do so. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you’ve probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.
As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 1 DVD at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $2 a month . The price of your 1 DVD at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $8.99 a month.
The new charge for Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after April 27, 2009 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details

If you wish to continue unlimited Blu-ray access for $2 a month, you don’t need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account.

….And on a day where the market is down 250 pts, the Netflix stock climbed 6% to just above $42. Very interesting as price hike news typically generates a poor reaction from investors. Well, I guess not for this powerhouse

That sucks but it’s a pretty smart move. It’s just a dollar but those dollars add up, especially with the popularity of Netflix and Blue Ray. They basically just doubled their Blue Ray profits, which I’m sure was huge to begin with.

@Kyle Exactly, it’s only $1, but give it 6 months and they may jump it another dollar. Plus there are rumors Netflix will begin charging for their streaming video. Like you say I don’t blame them, they have their expenses and want to make a big profit. Just a huge pain for everyone else.
