The Watchmen are here….
From the man who brought you 300 comes the next big super hero story arriving to theaters this Friday. The Watchmen,
a highly respected graphic novel from from the 80′s, is a story of how super heros begin to be shunned from society. To sum it up real quick, a fraternity of former super heros hang up their capes as the world begins to protest their existence. One of the them gets killed, the group is stunned, and the story primarily focuses on how they uncover how and why it happened.
Now to the banter…I am extremely pumped for this movie, but concerned at the same time. I did not like 300 the way many of my friends did. The movie was cool, but that’s about it. The plot was dry and dull at times, the over the top fighting got old, and Xerxes voice was just bizarre and creepy. Yes, the Spartans were really cool and Gerard Butler was a complete a badass but saying “Prepare for Glory” I can really only take seriously once. In fact, the movie was a box office hit and Zak Snyder is in pre-production for a sequel. But, this movie was relatively simple. Think about, its just constant comic book fighting, with occasional scenes of politcal uproar back in Sparta.
The Watchmen is going to be a whole new ball game for Snyder, who’s resume includes pretty much only “Dawn of the Dead” other than 300. This story is WAY more complex. He’s got many more personalities to develop, many more side stories to bring in, and much more comic book chaos then 300 could have ever have . If you guys were into the insanity of 300, then you’re going to be blown away with Watchmen. You have a man who can move planets, another who considers himself the smartest man in the world, an aloof vigilante who wears a mask over his face to hide his identity, a violent seeking war renegade, and that’s just the 4 of the crew.
The movie has potential to be legend…wait for it…dary. What 300 was missing, Sin City actually had. So there is hope for the graphic novel style movie with complex storylines and multiple characters. For those who really liked the Incredibles, and I did – I thought it was one of the best movies of 2004 and still shocked they haven’t made a sequel, The Watchmen is right up your alley. It’s an adult version of The Incredibles, well sort of.

I’m currently reading the graphic novel now, or as my co-workers like to say, the comic. It’s extremly complex, often requiring me to go back and re-read passages out loud for me to follow the plot. It’s pretty wild. The illustrations do help. Yes, I went there; man are the illustrations cool. My one concern is that Snyder doesn’t screw it up.
