The inside banter on the new baseball film Sugar

Sugar starring Algenis Perez Soto
, is the story of a Dominican baseball player struggling to get to the Majors. The majority of the film is about his character, Miguel “Sugar” Santos, playing in the minors in Iowa. We watch this character live a world outside his comfort zone, struggling to cope with non-Dominican society. While many of us have seen movies with similar premises, the word on the street is that this one is different.

Sugar was nominated for both a Sundance Film Award (Grand Jury Prize for drama) and Independent Spirit Award (Best Screenplay). Written and Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the people who brought you Half Nelson
, this film has been receiving fairly high praise amongst the indie film world. Reliable sources tells themoviebanter.com that Sugar does not disappoint. A must see if you are a baseball fan and a film that will leave you yearning for more.
Just to say a couple things from the banter side, I did see “The Rookie”. I was somewhat pleased with it. Not blown away but definitely enjoyed it. The trailer for this film looks better than that. The element of the foreigner testing out American waters seems to make this film more than just a baseball film. Check out the trailer and let us know. Sugar is set to open April 3rd in New York and LA.
