So I saw The Watchmen today with my dad and I have to say I was incredibly impressed of how good it was. I had a couple weeks to ask people what they thought so I went into it hearing various opinions, ranging from complete garbage to excellent. Interestingly, it was the people that didn’t like it that were the people I thought would have; most of whom who read the graphic novel.
Last week I wrote a post about how I was skeptical about Zak Snyder’s film making ability, and whether he was the right man for the job. I can now honestly say he most definitely was; I was blown away. He was able to clearly capture the complexity of the story and develop each of the characters quite well. For those who didn’t read the book, at the end of each chapter there is a separate set of pages that explains the origins of each character. So you have the chapter of the story kind of followed by a separate chapter designated for the origins of the character. I thought that was going to be Snyder’s most difficult task; to try and blend those 2 chapters into one fluent story, and due it repeatedly until the plot began to unfold.
Snyder did a phenomenal job in blending the story together. As a viewer we were able to watch the plot unfold as we learned about each character. Specifically, the way he told the back story of The Comedian was perfectly spun into the plot. We should also commend the editing department for that as well.
Snyder’s accomplishment in this movie sets the bar for the entire graphic novel film genre. He created an alternative reality while maintain a realistic setting; unlike 300 which was comic style and unrealistic the entire time. Sin City, which was excellent, was more choppy and simply not as good as The Watchmen. As an audience we are kept intrigued the entire time, questioning how in the hell did 3 hours pass as we leave the theater.
Pastor Jones: My Sister Loves You Before I finish, I just want to say that Rorschach is perhaps the coolest and most intriguing character we’ve seen on film in a long time. While he commits brutal and often unnecessary acts of violence, he warrants sympathy. It was like it was ok for him to jam glass into some innocent guys hand to obtain information. Now that I think about it, its similar to the way I feel towards Jack Bauer’s tactics. Brutal but ok, why because he’s Jack Bauer. Rorschach can break some old guys fingers for no reason, why because he’s Rorschach.
Zak Snyder, job well done.
