Will the Watchmen make over/under $100 Million Opening Weekend?

This week has been filled with everything revolving around the Watchmen, from pics, trailers, vids, and even the motion comic. Guess what, we’re not done yet. The craze is just getting going as today is opening day of the Watchmen. I have my ticket ready and night planned out to get a delicious burger dinner at Ray’s Hells Burger in Arlington and then off to Ballston mall for the movie right after.
I have been reading everything that has been thrown at me and more from the rest of the movie fans and fans of the graphic novel alike. This movie will be big, but how big? Snyder’s 2007 release “300″ made $70 million opening weekend and Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” made $155 million opening weekend.
How much will The Watchmen make opening weekend? I am giving the over under at $100 million dollars.
Reasons it may go over
1. Considered one of the greatest novels of all time
2. Solid reviews and tons of huge buzz surrounding the movie
3. Relatively no competition
Reasons it may stay under
1. Complicated story may not stick with viewers
2. No big name stars attached and epic (2.45 hrs)
3. Rated R
It will be interesting to see how much money this movie will make opening weekend. Do you think it will go over or stay under $100 million?

I’m a little wary about the movie because the reviews don’t say that it’s bad, but rather a bore… and the movie is 3 hrs long.
I’m still expecting great things, but if not… there’s always brickbreaker.
@Danny C It seems like it is a tough movie to judge based off of the reviews. The movie is supposed to be very similar to the graphic novel which is great, but also could be its downfall to the average moviegoer who is not a fan of the novel. It could potentially confuse and bore the viewer in this alternate universe if they find themselves not connecting with the characters and story. This is not a superhero movie in the likes of Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, etc. Can’t go into the movie with a comic book mentality. It is very dark and intense, this is not a kids movie, a ton of graphic violence and situations. If you are familiar with the basics of the story and understand what you are getting into and are open to a completely different type of movie, I think you will enjoy it, at least appreciate what Snyder has done.
I’m guessing this film will fall somewhere in the $64-$68M range. That’s what I predicted over our blog. I was taking into account a few factors, mostly the R rating.
Travis’s last blog post..New ‘UP’ Trailer
@Travis That is a good guess and I think the R rating will have a huge factor. This is not something parents can take younger kids to the way with Spider Man or X-Men. I was thinking closer to the $80 million range because it is such a popular novel and has had more buzz than most films because of the uniqueness of it. There also is absolutely nothing else out to see in theaters which helps it a lot. I’m curious why they decided to release it now instead of July 4th or some other summer blockbuster weekend.
Dont think it will break 100. on another note, why is every movie that hollywood comes out with always has to be an old comic or a superhero movie? Lack of creativity and new ideas in my opiniom
@Johnny I’m predicting in the $70-$80 million range. I think the R rating really will hurt the movie, and the fact that is an epic movie means there won’t be as many showings of it as there would be shorter movies. I agree that Hollywood clearly has nothing left, doing so many comic book movies, remakes, and unnecessary sequels that it’s pathetic. This however I am happy they adapted. It is considered one of the greatest novels of all time, has a great and dark complex story and is like nothing else you have seen. This isn’t necessarily a comic book movie, don’t expect Iron Man or X-Men. This is a dark, mysterious conspiracy movie that just so happens to be centered around retired superheroes.
