David Spaltro is a first time director and he has recently finished his first full length  feature film “Around.” It is the story of Doyle Simms who moves to NYC to fulfill his dreams only to find the harsh realities of trying to make it in the big city.  I had the pleasure of watching this movie and you can see my snap video review of the movie “Around” here.

David has been working hard at this project and is working on moving forward with it in the 09 film festivals.  David spent a few minutes answering some questions I had for him about the movie and his direction.

Here is a quick interview with David Spaltro, director of Around:

What inspired you to become a director?

I think I’ve always just been interested in story-telling and dabbled in art, writing, acting and it all sort of just came together. Though getting into a story and writing is great, a joy for me, I wouldn’t be nearly as happy sitting at a word processor by myself rather than collaborating on set with the DP and actors.

Did you base your directorial style off of someone?
I’m a fan of all directors and genres, Billy Wilder, Danny Boyle, John Carpenter, Richard Linklater and Martin Scorcese being probably the bigger ones. I don’t so much emulate as I feel inspired to do what they did, which is use all the tools in the process: movement, writing, color, music, editing, acting, etc; to tell the story in my own voice. I think that’s what made any of those and a number of other great filmmakers acclaimed, that they have their own voice and remain true to it in their own creative way.

Who are your influences?

Other than the filmmakers listed above, a host of foreign films and silent films I had the pleasure of seeing at film school. I’m also a really big fan of Joss Whedon and his storytelling and writing. He’s someone who cares so much about the story and the people living in the world he creates, big or small, and anything can happen. Laughing, crying, fear; not necessarily in that order.

What are your plans for the future with Around?
We are working with Cinetic Media/Cinetic Rights Management on digital and on-demand distribution of the film and now with all the positive buzz, reviews, and word of mouth spreading we are being re-approached about a possible theatrical and DVD release for this late-Summer early Fall. We’re also negotiating on putting out a tie-in soundtrack through a record label, focusing on all the great local NYC indie-rock bands such as My Teenage Stride, Takka Takka, The Diggs, and Black Hollies involved in the film. That’s currently also slated for Fall.
The film and the heart of it is very much me, and while I’ve always stated that once you start writing it’s all technically “fiction” since you’re only able to tell from your point of view what happened, the film is pretty autobiographical. You have to squish events and characters into a narrative, and even though there’s plenty of word for word, sometimes the more personal stuff is in the other places.

What were some of the biggest challenges with making your first feature film?

Money and time on the budget we had, also running into post-trouble after being screwed by our original sound guy. I ‘d say anything that can go wrong usually does worse, but I was blessed to be supported and surrounded by a great group of people including the actors Rob Evans, Molly Ryman and Marcel Torres; Lee Gillentine, Nick Boris as the producers, Grant DeSimone as our amazing AD, April Cary who took charge of all the wardrobe, Mako who made everyone beautiful with make-up, and many many more. Whatever happened they supported and got us over the obstacles. I wouldn’t hav a film without them.

  2. @Kyle I have not met David in person although have had multiple conversations through email with him. He’s a good guy and it was a good movie. I wish him and his team the best of luck, and hopefully it will be in theaters soon for you and everyone to see, I really think it can make it.
