Wolverine: X-Men Origins starts Summer 2009

And so the Summer 2009 lineup begins. With Wolverine set to open on Friday, the Summer 2009 blockbusters are set to get underway. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the blood thirsty human-animal we all know and love as “The Wolverine.” Interestingly enough, we could say this all began a couple weeks back when a pirated copy of the film was leaked to the public. Hey, no publicity is bad publicity right. I doubt that this minor hiccup will have any real negative impact on the box office success of the film. Jackman is pretty talented guy, a very dynamic actor, and starring in a hundred million dollar franchise that has given birth to an extremely valuable trilogy. Come on, if that doesn’t spell success than please tell me what does.
“Wolverine: X-Men Origins” is the first of a set of prequel spin-offs based off the X-Men franchise. Not to get too sidetracked but the other spinoff Marvel has packed away in the fault is Magneto, and I’d just like to mention several other new other non-X-Men films including Thor, Nick Fury, Silver Surfer, and Dr Strange. What this movie has, that X-Men did not is a small amount of characters to develop. The difficulties involved in developing a strong X-Men story do not quite affect this film. Why is that, well…

There are 2 main characters, not 10000. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine and Liev Schrieber plays Sabertooth. There are not too many major egos to feed like there were in the trilogy aka Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Famke Jansen, Anna Paquin, and Ian McKellen. I am extremely excited for this movie because it seems like it has the potential to be more character driven (than the trilogy) and not totally reliant on special affects. The powers of the two main characters are pretty much raw strength and the ability to heal as opposed to metal manipulation, telekinesis, weather manipulation, laser eyes, teleportation, power absortion, etc. So we have basic powers requiring little special affects and only 2 main characters compared to lets say atleast 6.
Part of this story involves the role of William Stryker, played by Brian Cox in X-Men 2, probably the best of film of the trilogy and among the best comic movies ever made. (Let us know what your favorites are). Stryker pretty much created Wolverine, as we know him, by providing him with his adamantium bone structure making him almost indestructible. In addition the spin-off also reprises the role of Sabertooth, who was Wolverine’s main opponent in the first X-Men.
So I say to you, check out Wolverine on Friday and let us know what you think. It is sure to entertain.
Review of the film will be put on the site over the weekend after we see it.
