June 2009 Lineup – What to See
Posted by Matt Rosenberg on June 1, 2009 at 12:10 am
If May 2009 was the month of big Summer Blockbusters, June 2009 is the month of Summer comedies. We at the Movie Banter would like to go through each major opening in June, just like we did for May, and go through what movies to see and to skip. From Will Ferrell in a prehistoric time to 4 buddies living it up in Vegas, June 2009 looks to be an interesting month. Also, we have the highly anticipated sequel to Transformers. See below for the lineup .

June 5th – Land of The Lost – SEE IT
Based on the 1970′s TV Show, Land of the Lost premieres on June 5th. It has been a long time since Will Ferrell has delivered a truly funny movie. His 3 previous movies are “Step Brothers”,” Semi-Pro”, and “Blades of Glory,” none of which were really that big of a comedy hit. Where is the Will Ferrell we saw in Anchorman, Old School, and even Talledega Nights. Paired this time with Danny McBride from hilarious HBO show “Eastbound and Down,” Will Ferrell looks to recapture goofy man glory. The trailer looks good, and he is finally put back into a movie with a bizarrely interesting premise. I think this movie will surprise us and Danny McBride will add an awesome element; “You’re f*ckin OUT” . Go see it
WALL-E divx June 5th – The Hangover
Well you know I mentioned classic comedy “Old School” in my thoughts on Land of the Lost. Well “Old School” director Todd Phillips is back and looks like he put together the potential for another cult classic funny man hit. How can you screw up a movie about a bunch of buddies having a bachelor party in Vegas with a cast of Ed Helms (Andy from the Office), Bradley Cooper (Wedding Crashers and Nip Tuck), comedian Zach Galifiankis, and a Mike Tyson cameo. Well you can’t. We have all been there where we woke up the following morning trying to piece the previous night back together. Add Vegas to that and you’re pretty much untouchable. Just from looking at the trailer, the chemistry on screen looks great. Definitely check it out. GO SEE IT
The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre move June 12th – The Taking of Pelham 123
I don’t know too much about this movie but this is a remake of a 1970′s Walter Matthau movie. This one stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Travolta finds himself in another bad guy role and Denzel plays the same cop figure character in every movie. A completely overrated actor. This might be interesting but I say skip it. If someone you know sees it and gives it a thumbs up, then give it a thought. For now, plan on doing something else that weekend
June 19th – Year One
In the third big comedy of June, we find Jack Black and awkward funny man Michael Cera in a cave man world set in “Year One.” I think Jack Black is hilarious and consistently delivers no matter how bad a movie he is in. I mean come on, he actually did the movie “Nacho Libre” and the only reason that movie was remotely funny was because of him. Wait, really, he did a movie called “Nacho Libre.” Jack Black paired with Michael Cera looks to be promising. The trailer looks good and Harold Ramis is behind the camera this time as both Writer and Director. The man is a genius. I say SEE IT.
June 24th – Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen
Ok, Transformers is probably the single most anticipated movie of the Summer other than Harry Potter. The original in 2007 was surpringly awesome and took off once word spread. The action, the humor, and Megan Fox are all back in this one as well. Not to mention somehow the robots looks real; probably the single biggest factor in why the original was so good. Michael Bay is back to direct the Sequel and Steven Spielberg is back as Executive Producer. Spielberg rarely lets anything he touches turn to anything but gold. Spielberg’s boy Shia LaBeouf is back as Sam Witwicky and is rejoined with Optimus Prime to battle Megatron. Also for those who didn’t know Megatron’s voice is played by Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from “The Matrix” and Lord Elrond from “The Lord of the Rings.” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” finishes out our month of June and is definitely the MUST SEE movie of the month.

Wow, really? Denzel Washington overrated? I think not. He’s a highly skilled actor. I haven’t seen him n this role yet, but I do agree that he has been playing a lot of cop figures lately. But that does not diminish his ability as an actor.

Perhaps the most overrated actor of this generation. No role requires him to leave his comfort zone. He’s great as the cool calm and collected lead guy and also plays a great intense cop. Other than that, he has very litte. He didn’t even the deserve the Oscar he won. Russell Crowe was far superior as John Nash in “A Beautiful Mind.” Denzel’s best role was “The Hurricane,” a truly great performance yet he was still second best that year. Don’t get me wrong, he is a good for what the characters he plays, but that’s it.
