So I got in one of those moods where I just needed to go to the movies. I literally did not care what I saw, I just needed to be there. Going through some of the movies I have not seen, I decided to go check out “The Taking of Pelham 123.”
Now, in my June 2009 Lineup Post I said to skip this film on the belief that a couple of overrated actors were playing their typical characters in a rather bland film. Like the way I felt after watching “Angels and Demons,” I was wrong.
“The Taking of Pelham 123″ is a very enjoyable film. Denzel Washington plays an MTA subway control operator trying to negotiate with a train hijacker, John Travolta. That’s pretty much the entire movie. There really is nothing else to describe in regards to the premise. Though the plot was typically straight forward, there is something about this film that makes it interesting. It’s also important to mention that it is a remake of the 1974 movie sharing the same title. This version modernizes the older film.
download Donald's Double Trouble The film is set in New York and really uses New York as an additional character. Director Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), shows several zoom out shots of the city to show the location of where everybody is. So as a viewer, we are constantly looking at the city map and being reminded of where everything is taking place. As the demands of Travolta are on a time table, the cut of the film constantly displays how much time is left before things are going to get bad. So this constant cutting out and countdown display adds an intense element that causes you to be somewhat at the edge of your seat.
Last Exit full movie The film also stars John Turturro and James Gandolfini, two incredibly talented actors. Both are in supporting roles here and give very good performances; Turturro as a NYPD hostage negotiator and Gandolfini as a not so popular mayor.
As a New Yorker, I really think the constant NY reference made the film better for me. A consistent theme throughout the movie is of the government not supporting its people. We see a bitter hijacker, a struggling MTA employee and disliked Mayor. All of them share the same feeling of New York (or the government) just not being able to help out; or it would be even more accurate to say they had little faith in the system. As we are in times of heavily relying on our governments ability to help the public, we all seem to ask ourselves this same question; Is the government doing the right thing? Well by the end of the movie we see all of the characters understand what they are fighting for. This total circle in the plot provided a very satisfying ending to the movie.
I am humbled again here when I say “The Taking of Pelham 123″ is surprisingly good and worth checking out. It is not anything exceptional nor dissappointing. You will leave satisfied.

interesting update on a previous post. this new post provides more info on the movie. i actually thought the constant zoom out of the city was kind of redundant. Basically the plot spans a very stressful one hour in new york city, but we didn’t need to be reminded of where the setting was. love the countdown though. it did provide a certain edge-of-your-seat element. It was an enjoyable film.
@Candice,
You are right. I was too quick to judge. The film was about as straight forward as can be. Good guy vs Bad Guy, big vs small, nothing to out there. However, I think the day to day struggles that each character faces humanized the film and made the viewer be able to connect to the onscreen people. Tony Scott was able to deliver as well. If I were to rate this movie, I’d say about a 7.5. Very good, definitely left satisfied.
@Candice,
Also wanted to say, I highly respect your opinions. From briefly blogging with you over the past couple weeks, it is obvious that you are very good at describing the good/bad parts of movies and why you liked them. We may not always agree but you consistently make fair and clear points to each movie we discuss. We greatly appreciate your feedback. You can write for us anytime.
Thanks
