July 2009 Lineup

So with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” rounding out the June 2009 Lineup, we make our way into July. I would be willing to bet my life savings that the movie retains top spot at the box office this weekend, but a new highly anticipated film, Public Enemies, will put the Transformers movie to the test as it opens July 1st. The month of July also has multiple major blockbuster debuts in Bruno and the most highly anticipated film of the Summer, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Overall, the month is a mix of film genres including crime drama, comedy, and fantasy. Let’s go through each week.

Public Enemies – July 1st

Johnny Depp and Christian Bale star in this crime drama, which is being well received from Critics. Peter Travers, of   Rolling Stone, has really been raving about this film calling it when one of the best films of the year thus far. Top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) is dispatched to take down John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his fellow gangsters during a booming crime wave in the 1930s. If you ask me it looks like a combination of “The Untouchables” and “3:10 To Yuma,” which are both very good movies. Johnny Depp on screen in a role other than Jack Sparrow will also be a relief. Maybe he’ll recreate the role he created in Blow. Definitely GO SEE IT.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – July 1st

This third installment to the Ice Age franchise brings back all the voices of the characters. Both the first and second ones were cute. When Sid (John Leguizamo) gets into some trouble, it’s up to Manny (Ray Romano), Ellie (Queen Latifah), Diego (Denis Leary), and Scrat to save their friend. If you liked the first two movies you will probably go see it, but if you are new to the franchise you can wait until DVD.

Brüno – July 10th

Sasha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen in this installment of his flamboyantly gay character Bruno. Borat was incredible: literally laugh out loud funny and at times truly shocking. Rather than looking for Pamela Anderson like Borat, Brüno travels the world in search of the latest style trends and opinions on all things pop culture. We have all seen the constant TV trailers. Originally given an NC 17 rating

(but has been rerated ‘R”, this comedy is sure to provide instant laughter.

If you like overly offensive comedies this is a must see. If you are easily offended, do not see it. We say GO SEE IT.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – July 15th

This film was originally set to open in November 2008 in time for the Christmas season. A minor setback in production and some touch ups pushed it back to this Summer. This is the sixth film in the 7 book franchise, all written by J.K Rowling, and is going to be the best of all the movies. I have read each book and believe this one will be the single best Harry Potter movie. Unbreakable trailer In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort’s past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) and a book written by The Half Blood Prince.

Strangers with Candy divx

This is the single most anticipated movie this Summer and will probably surpass Transformers for biggest box office smash. Shia’s recent addition to the A-List is no match for Harry Potter. Everyone from ages 5-75 will see it, and you all will be satisfied; you will leave the theater stunned. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is July’s MUST SEE movie.

The Ugly Truth – July 24th

Katherine Heigl makes her biggest return to the screen since 2007’s comedy smash “Knocked Up.” An alpha male TV show correspondent (Gerard Butler) makes a deal with his love-challenged producer (Katherine Heigl): he coaches her to land the guy of her dreams. This is July’s chick flick. However, I saw the trailer for this movie in “The Hangover” and I really thought it looked hilarious. It’s possible the studio put a trailer together of all the best scenes, but if I disregard my skeptical feelings, this romantic comedy does look funny; a good date movie for sure. If you go to the movies this weekend check it out, if not wait until DVD. Harry Potter will be tops at the box office anyways.

G-Force – July 24th

G-Force? Really? No! That’s all I have to say; NO. I refuse to dignify this movie with a Banter run down. Sure it stars the hilarious Zack Galifiankis from “The Hangover,” but a movie about super hero guinea pigs is just not going to be good. This movie looks just straight awful. The man behind green lighting this movie should be forced to refund the tickets of those poor souls who are forced to take their kids to see this. SKIP IT

The Orphan – July 24th (Limited Release)

This film is the second big Horror movie this Summer after “Drag Me to Hell.” Trailers look anything but exciting.

After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child, Esther, as a hopeful way to bring some joy into their lives. All of a sudden a strange sequence of events follows Esther’s (Isabelle Fuhrman) arrival and things just get creepy. The horror movie to see this Summer is “Drag Me To Hell.” You can bet this one won’t be good. SKIP IT

Funny People – July 31st

Adam Sandler makes his return to the big screen since his comedy hit “Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” Zohan was awesome by the way.

In this movie, Sandler plays a veteran stand-up comic who is given less than a year to live. He befriends an aspiring comedian (Seth Rogan), whom he hires as his personal assistant. Rogen is annoying, but the movie also has Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill. The trailer is funny, but I really think they loaded the trailer with the film’s best scenes. Sandler hasn’t been the same since his days of Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy. This movie puts him a serious role also, a type of movie that he is simply not cut out for. Use this weekend as another chance to see the other movies you missed out on. SKIP IT

  1. I’ll be all over Public Enemies this month. Can’t think of what else is coming out, but that’s on my list so far.

  2. @Candice I will def be seeing that movie as well.

  3. I think the real challenge this weekend, July 3rd-5th is Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs vs Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Ice Age 3 debuted Wednesday on top with nearly $14 million.
And you don’t want to see Funny People?! It looks great! Adam Sandler seems to be breaking out into the restricted comedy field and Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin are now cult classics. I think that Funny People will soon be joining them…Good post, man!
