It has just been announced that the dynamic comedy duo of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will be hosting this years Oscars.

This is a pretty shocking revelation for the academy to select 2 co-hosts for the show.  They expect the fan base of the two to be a big pool to gain viewers for this years show, especially with the increase of 10 films in the best picture category. Blindness ipod

Today Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced the decision.

“We think the team of Steve and Alex are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic.  “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”

This is big news and a safe choice.  I’m surprised if the reason they elected for both of them to do it was because in some way they felt that Baldwin couldn’t carry the Oscars award show by himself.  If that was the reason they would be wrong as he is a funny personality and all actors who have worked with him have nothing but great things to say.  Maybe the work load was too much.  Maybe he didn’t feel he could handle it himself but either way it should be a fun show to see the two play off of each other.  Martin is a pro at it hosting the 73rd and 75th award shows.

This seems to be the best of both worlds with comedy trying to hit all age groups and angles.  Martin a classic pro at the comedy scene who has been a star for decades, and Baldwin who is one of the funniest men on TV and on a hit TV show 30 Rock.  The two should hit a broad audience and pose as a must see for many fans.

The only thing that will bring down this years award show is the fact that the movies were terrible this past year and the addition of more movies in the best picture category will leave either a lot of crap, or a lot of movies nobody has ever heard of.  Interested to see how this award show will fare, it has potential to be entertaining, more than I can say for the movies that will be represented.
