12/20/09 Box Office Results: No Surprises Here: ‘Avatar’ Conquers the World

Thank God Avatar made a crapload of money this weekend; it’s too good to have bombed. Audiences embraced James Cameron’s latest, helping it gross an estimated $73 million domestically. Around the world, however, the film made $159.2 million. Combined, that’s $232.2 million in three days. The King of the World is back!
Raking in $60.8 million less than the current box office dominator, The Princess and the Frog managed $12.2 million. Falling a sharp 49.5% from last weekend’s haul, Disney’s latest is a good $60.2 million away from making back its budget. That being said, the film hasn’t been released overseas yet. Its total is up to $44.8 million, surely not what Mickey Mouse was expecting from the animated flick.
Behind Frog, Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side continues to do rather well. Earning another $10 million, Side’s total is up to a tremendous $164.7 million, making back its $29 million budget with $135.7 million in pure profit. Warner Bros is going to have a very merry Christmas indeed, with likely box office dominator Sherlock Holmes also coming December 25th.
Another debut Did You Hear About the Morgans? did respectably, taking in $7 million on 2,718 screens. It opens with nearly half of writer-director Marc Lawrence’s previous film Music and Lyrics’ opening weekend gross of $13.6 million. I really enjoyed Lyrics after seeing it in February 2007, so I was pretty excited for Morgans. However taking a look at its Rotten Tomatoes score, only seven critics out of 67 gave it a positive rating. That’s only 10% of reviewers enjoying Morgans.
I’m pretty sick of talking about The Twilight Saga: New Moon in these box office posts, but nevertheless Chris Weitz’s vampire tale rounds out the top five with another $4.4 million. I dare not look at its total gross over these past couple of weeks, although if you did you’d know that it has $274.6 million. Avatar may not have beaten any of its midnight showings or opening weekend records, however I hope it’s able to make more money overall than Moon. Judging by Avatar’s weekend gross, that might actually happen.
Out of the top five-
- After expanding to another 103 screens this weekend, Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air cracked into the top ten at #8 with $3.1 million, its total now $8.1 million. One could only guess that after finally expanding nationwide December 23rd it could even slink into the top five, maybe.
- Rob Marshall’s Nine opened in limited release this weekend before expanding everywhere on Christmas day. The musical managed $247,000 on four screens.
- The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt, opened with $148,000 on 20 screens.
- Crazy Heart, starring a likely Oscar contending Jeff Bridges, debuted with $84,200 on four screens.
