Sometime last February I wrote a post about how Slumdog Millionaire was overrated and did not deserve the acolades it was receiving. While I said it was a very good movie, I did not think it was great. Well, I changed my mind.

Sometimes it takes a second or third or even fourth viewing to really see how good something is. The film has been all over cable these days and let me tell you, I’ve been watching. I now see how amazing a film it is. I understand what all the fuss was about.

From the cinematography to the score, this film has it all. The way film is cut to show flash backs ties perfectly into the story.  The actors are beyond believable, the story is fascinating, and the overall product is nothing short of amazing.

I think what completely won me over was the scene when Jamal is waiting for Latika in the train station, for the first time. He flexes his arms in fustration thinking Latika is going to be a no show, but then through smoke there she is.  Jamal has this face of complete joy, and Latika is standing there back against the light. All of a sudden, Salim and his thugs grab her and you know the rest. That scene literally summed up the entire movie. What put it over the top for me was the soundtrack in that scene. It captured everything there needed to be. Here is the clip if you want to check it out.

I know I have been adamant about my position of the film. Perhaps I had a rough day in the office when I saw it, perhaps I didn’t want to follow the rest of world who loved it; sort of like the way I refused to join the Dave Matthew’s band wagon in high school. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong, and I am here to say I was wrong.

Slumdog Millionaire is an incredible movie. While I still think Gran Torino might be the best movie of 2008, Slumdog and Gran Torino are damn close. Bravo to the entire cast and crew. Slumdog is top notch

Keep Bantering.

  1. Haha, thanks for posting this. Funny that you praised Dev Patel in that one scene after totally trash-talking him in your entire post!

  3. I really liked the film but the book is excellent too. It’s obviously very contrived, and a lot of it doesn’t really make sense, but it’s still very enjoyable and the message is a good one too.
