Is Christopher Nolan a Movie Genius or Putz?

Over the weekend I saw Sherlock Holmes and they had a couple of pretty cool trailers to get excited about for the 2010 movie lineup.  One of those movies was Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by the “It” director of the decade Christopher Nolan.  After revitalizing the Batman franchise where Batman Begins landed in both Matt and mine’s top 10 movies of the decade list, and The Dark Knight which was given that honor in basically every other movie bloggers list, he is working on his next project.

Inception had it’s trailer premiere during the Sherlock Holmes previews.

After watching this 1 minute plus trailer, the conclusion is I have no idea what the hell this movie is about or what to think of it.  Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  I am intrigued by the whole Nolan/DiCaprio pairing, enough to want to learn more and enough that the names alone will have me seeing the movie regardless of potential reviews.

But is this movie going to be a huge bust, or is Nolan hiding the premise of the movie and will slowly reveal a bit more to build anticipation the way James Cameron did with Avatar.  Now this movie appears to be more on the line of a Memento type  of movie opposed to the sci-fi Avatar, but still.  It looks like either the potential attempt to build the word of mouth marketing for the movie could be similar, or maybe this movie will just be a disaster.

DiCaprio is probably my favorite actor and has been carefully been picking and choosing his roles for the past decade.  With Shutter Island coming out as well in February of 2010, it looks like he is now on a string of different type of movies than he normally plays.  Could this be a great career choice, or are we going to be questioning these decisions.  It’s way too early to tell the direction that Nolan will take with this movie and if it will be good or bad, but if nothing else, I’m thoroughly intrigued.

What do you think of the trailer for Inception?

  1. SO excited for Inception. Yeah, I have no idea what the hell this thing is about, but anything from Chris Nolan is worth seeing.
DiCaprio has made some awesome movies lately (The Departed, Revolutionary Road, Catch Me If You Can).

  2. @Nick He’s been on a hot streak, hopefully this duo will make big things in 2010
