Second Run Theater Cured My Hangover

Movies are released on DVD only a few months after the movie was released in theaters. This has had pros and cons to the movie industry, some times people don’t want to spend the high movie costs to see a movie in theaters. Other times its great because with the movie fresh in their mind they will not only see the movie in theater, but then spend more money on the DVD containing extras so they can watch over and over again.
But sometimes waiting those 4 months for the DVD to come out is just too long. What to do in a situation like this where you would like to see your favorite movie before it hits DVD? You can illegally download the movie, which let’s get real, everyone has from time to time, but the quality clearly lacks.
Your best option….second run theaters. I did not cure my hangover yet for the blockbuster summer comedy and needed to watch it one more time on the big screen. Last night I went to the Arlington Cinema Drafthouse not too far from where I live which plays second run movies that were out only a few months back. It was the first time I went there or to any second run theater and loved it. If I didn’t get enough lines from The Hangover the first time I saw the movie, I certainly did last night.
Alan and the gang were classic, and a lot of the subtle lines that made me grin the first time, made me die laughing the second time. Like Old School, another Todd Phillip movie, you seen to catch on more to some of the lines the second time you see it. The theater itself was nicer than I thought, and second run doesn’t mean run down. Not only was watching the movie on a big screen again great, it was nice to be watching it on comfortable leather chairs while eating nachos, wings, and sipping on some cold beers. Granted a $2 movie ticket ended up becoming a large bill by the end of the night, but it was totally worth it, and one of the best movie experiences I’ve ever had. I could actually sit in the chair comfortably, not shift and be all gumby like trying to find a comfort zone in the usual cramped theater seats.
If you have a second run theater near you, I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
Have you ever been to a second run theater? What were your thoughts?

I saw this three times during its run in June-July. I cannot wait for the DVD to come out! It really is the most quotable movie since Superbad.
I’ve been to a second-run theater before.
It was actually not too far from my current high school, but, unfortunately, due to the fact that they weren’t getting enough people to come to the theater, it closed down and was replaced for a parking lot for Best Buy! D:<
The theater itself was pretty nice, it wasn't crummy at all. It was small, but it had a nice long concession stand and a room with an arcade in it.
The theaters themselves were cool, because unlike the other theaters around here, the screens actually had curtains that came up at the beginning of the show.
I only saw two and a half movies there; Lilo & Stitch, Looney Tunes: Back in Action and half of Spider-man (I was still a kid, and I was pretty much terrified of the intense action sequences), but I would've loved to have seen more there today. Too bad it's gone… :`(
@Jordan They are hard to find, but maybe there is one not too far from where you live. Not only is it a cool experience, but it’s really nice because the chairs are bigger and more comfortable and you sit at a table opposed to a cramped row. You can get drinks and food served to you like a restaurant. It really is dinner and a movie, fun times.
@Craig: Yeah! It does sound like fun times.
I so far can’t find any type of those theaters (whether it has or doesn’t have a dinner and a movie) near me. The only ones I could find were pretty far away from where I live. (about 3 1/2 hours to be specific!) I guess I’ll have to wait for a day when I’ll be free of everything and take a trip to one of these theaters and see how it feels. Judging from your description, it sounds pretty interesting.
@Jordan Yea that’s quite the drive. Maybe not worth a 3 and a half hour drive, but if really bored one weekend, may be worth the nostalgia trip.
