Posted by Matt Rosenberg on December 6, 2009 at 11:05 am

Hello Banterers,

The end of December 2009 will bring a close to first decade of the new millennium: the 2000-2009 decade.  In order to properly show our respects for this decade in film, Craig, Nick, and I will each put together a list of the 10 best movies of the decade. These lists will be posted starting December 14th and will end on December 24th (Christmas Eve).  We will separate these lists into 6 posts; Matt’s 10-6, Craig’s 10-6, Nick’s 10-6…Matt’s 5-1, Craig’s 5-1, Nick’s 5-1.

This is the perfect time of the year to discuss favorite movies, and considering the timing, its the perfect time to dicuss the best movies of the decade. Therefore, we want to hear from you as well.

What do you think are the 10 best movies of the decade?

Keep Bantering

  1. definitely have to put Revolutionary Road and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button on the list.

  2. @Candice I would have to disagree with both of those. Benjamin Button was good, not great by any means. Revolutionary Road was very well acted but a little dull with no real substance to it. Good movies, best of decade? Not a chance.

  3. @Craig Really? Revolutionary Road isn’t going on my list of the best of the decade, but I really loved it. Would have to go on my list of best of ’08.

  4. Gomorrah, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,Almost Famous, Lost in Translation, Talk to Her, The Best of Youth, Oldboy, Punch Drunk Love, Requiem for a Dream,In Bruges, American Splendor, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,Y Tu Mama Tambien, Cache,

  5. @dan,

great call with Old Boy. I would consider it amongst the top of the decade, but not sure it would make my top 10. Also like the call Requiem

  6. @dan Lost in Translation is a great pick. Won’t be on my list, though.

  7. In no order of preference:

    -Traffic
    -American Beauty
    -Gladiator
    -Crash
    -No Country for Old Men
    -The Pianist
    -Slumdog Millionaire
    -In Bruges
    -The Counterfeiters
    -Michael Clayton

  8. @DT Ha, looks like you went straight for the standard Oscar type movies. I agree with a bunch of them.

  9. @Craig,

I did think I was slightly too “mainstream” with some of my picks. Honestly, Gladiator almost didn’t make the cut, but I wrestled with how to replace it (and Crowe’s performance in it) and could not justify the alternatives. A few of my leftovers: Memento, Brokeback, Lord of the Rings-Return, Lost in Translation.

  10. in no order:
Gladiator, Dark Knight, Catch me if you can, Cindarella Man, Sin City, Remember the Titans, Men of Honor, Van Wilder, Glory Road, Inglorious Bastards

  11. @DT All solid leftovers, such a hard decision. Gladiator is arguably my favorite movie of all time so it’s up there for me. When I make my list I’m trying to spread the wealth between different types of movies since there are clearly way too many that could be on this list.

  12. @Jason Solid list, glad to see you put a comedy on their as well.
