Due to MGM’s financial misery, I had assumed that the only two projects I cared about (The Hobbit and James Bond 23) were going to get lost in the mix. Hobbit is ready to go into casting already while the sequel to Quantum of Solace was an idea that’s just been kicked around. Worry no more, Bond fans. According to THR, Sam Mendes is set to direct the 23rd Bond film. Hell yes!

Sam Mendes is one of four filmmakers I practically worship, and having him take the reins of the new Bond is such a great move. However it is an odd one indeed, my enthusiasm aside. Mendes is most known for his Oscar-winning 2000 portfolio of a broken family American Beauty, and as anyone who’s seen it knows (if you haven’t seen it stop reading this right now and rush to the nearest Blockbuster), it’s by no means an action movie of the Bond standard. Closest kick-and-punch thing Mendes has been a part of would have to be Jarhead, the 2005 war drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx, though that was more about the dreadful loneliness that comes with being a soldier than anything else. It should be interesting to see the kind of spin he’ll put on the series.

What I’m not sure of is why the franchise can’t seem to hold down one director. Either of Martin Campbell or Marc Foster would have been superb choices to handle the next MI6 flick. Nevertheless, this could finally be Mendes’s big break. After all, Solace raked in $586.1 million worldwide. He’s already a cultural icon in the eyes of the film fanatics who cared enough to pay attention to his work, but directing a James Bond movie could finally make him a household name with the rest of American audiences.

What do you think?
