Snap Review of Daybreakers

If you sandwiched Children of Men with 28 Days Later, you would get Daybreakers. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, and has a small role for Isabel Lucas, the new girl from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It is written and directed by the Spierig brothers.

In the not too distant future vampires have taken over the world and farm humans for blood.  Kind of an unsettling premise huh.  Daybreakers was made for those vampire crazed fans who can’t enough of the blood sucking creatures. This just adds to my rant from Summer 2009 about the recent vampire craze in the entertainment industry.

Daybreakers is a fairly straight forward vampire movie but concerns itself with a theme not yet really touched upon in the vampire genre.  The story is about a vampire, Hawke, who really does not want to be a vampire and yearns to be human again.  He meets the right people, which includes Dafoe, and gets his shot.

There really isn’t anything complex about this movie.  While the story is told from a unique perspective, the plot itself is very straight forward. However, it works. Often times we see movies that we know how will end, yet the road that takes us there is an entertaining one.  There are some plot twists, some cool action scenes, lots of vampire biting, and a ton of blood.  If you like vampires or even sci-fiction for that matter, you will like this movie.
