Why Howard Stern is Not Wrong For Ripping on Gabourey Sidibe

With all the crappy movies and weak 3D movie attempts being pushed out in Hollywood today to make a quick and easy buck, it’s nice to see some hidden gems break out.  Every year it seems that independent movies break through and generate excellent word of mouth to push it to the mainstream audience, and to push the actors involved to stand out.  This year we happened to have seen a few low budget movies make big splashes, same with the actors involved.  One of these actresses is Gabourey Sidibe from Precious.

She portrayed a girl growing up in Harlem living in an abusive family and who has mothered children of her father who raped her.  The actress did such a great job that she was rewarded for performance with an Oscar nomination.  It was great to see such a young and bright star break out and walk the red carpet.  Even though she wasn’t a winner that night, she still was a winner in the eyes of many and developed a big fan base.  She certainly will receive many new roles for her performance.

But a few weeks ago, shock jock (and someone I laugh my ass off listening to every morning) Howard Stern made a few comments about Gabourey Sidibe.  He mentioned that because of her excessive weight she will not be able to break out of the stereotypical roles likes Precious, that she will be typed cast because of it.  Howard Stern has a knack for driving controversy and being frank, and this is another example where many people were flipping out and accusing Stern of his evil comments.

Well I agree with Stern, and he makes a very valid point saying that unless she loses weight, she will only be offered “Precious” type of roles.  I do not believe that actresses or girls for that matter need to be stick thin like the brittle models you see in magazines, or need 10 plastic surgeries in one day like the most pointless human being alive Heidi Montag.  But it is clear that in Hollywood that some people play certain types of roles based on their size, and this will end up being the case with Sidibe unless she changes.  Stern argues that she should lose weight, for both her career and health benefits.  Now clearly the health benefits are obvious, but it should be noted that I believe her career would improve as well if she lost a little weight.

It would open her up to new roles and not the “heavy black girl” roles that she is receiving now.  Surprisingly the comments were actually better received by Sidibe than some word have thought and she knows she has a weight issue.  Maybe she will take the next steps to try to live a healthier lifestyle.  Of course in the end, as long as she is comfortable in her body, that’s all that counts, but it could be the demise of her career.  I thought her performance in Precious was incredible and it’s even more amazing when you see her bubbly self in person.  I would hate for her to forever be known as “Precious” and hope that she can break out of the typecasted mold so fans can enjoy her future performances.

Do you think Gabourey Sidibe will be a type cast unless she loses weight?

  1. I think we have to look at other actresses that had similar starts like Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera. I wouldn’t say both of these actresses have busted out of their prototypical role.

But in a larger sense very few actors travel freely out of the roles they were discovered in.

  2. @Dmbosstone I agree, they haven’t blown up either but Sidibe falls even more into the trap because she is heavier than both of them.

  3. Is it not possible(health issues aside), to have films and TV depicting women of all shapes and sizes. James Gandolfini, John Goodman & Jonah Hill all have steady work as actors. Gabourey is talented, and if the promos for SNL are any indication, a very funny actress. Why does it have to be either or?

  4. @Crystal It is possible, that’s not the argument, it’s that her work may be of the same kind and style. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, but out of the 3 guy actors you mentioned, only 1 of them isn’t type casted. I’ll add Kevin James to that as well and that’s another heavy actor who’s type casted. John Goodman is the only one who breaks that mold. Time will only tell if she will get a chance to break out and try different genres, but unfortunately she may never get the chance.

  5. Her roll on a Showtime comedy doesn’t show that “Hollywood” is giving her a chance? Have you seen the promo for The C Word? Just the fact that she’s hosting SNL shows she’s branching out.

  6. @Crystal There’s a big difference between being the flavor of the week who is hosting SNL and developing a movie career.

  7. I gotta say Craig, you’re kind of a Debbie Downer. Have some faith buddy. Lets wait for the eggs to hatch before we put her in the hazzbeen file.

  8. @Crystal I wish her the best of luck. I really liked Precious and she deserved all the accolades and it’s nice to see a new young talent arrive with quality work. I hope she gets some good roles to come, I’m just not disagreeing with Stern’s comments that she may be type casted.
