Bobcat Goldthwait Cooking up Musical Comedy upon Kinks Album

Here’s a guy I’d follow to Hell and back. We may have even gone there already with my personal favorite movie of 2009 World’s Greatest Dad, the claustrophobic, black-as-the-night-sky comedy about high school and our superficial vision of what makes a parent quote-unquote “perfect”. Whatever Goldthwait nabbed next would be met nothing short of a welcome. Low and behold, the guy’s made good. Since World’s Greatest Goldthwait has directed eight episodes of Comedy Central’s brink-of-cancellation sketch show Important Things with Demetri Martin. Now according to THR the writer-director is developing a flick off of a script he wrote based upon ‘76s Kinks mantra Schoolboys in Disgrace. Picture Across the Universe; the album’s original soundtrack will be redubbed by the cast of the movie.
Musicals have been a long-lost genre of film for a while now (sad to say High School Musical may be the best in recent years), and while Schoolboys in Disgrace isn’t freshly written it sure is one spitfire of an idea. Maybe I’m still lost in World’s Greatest Dad or drunk on Shakes the Clown, but here’s what Goldthwait had to say on the project—
“‘Schoolboys in Disgrace’ is a story that any kid who has felt that they are not being treated fairly can relate to, all set to some of the greatest rock songs you’ll ever hear. It’s the genesis story of a super villain set to music. It’s the story of the world’s most charming criminal and a realistic high school musical for all the kids who hate sugary, sweet, unrealistic high school musicals.”
The movie itself is about fighting back against “the establishment” after a kid and his band of friends is publicly ridiculed by the school’s dean. Like Goldthwait says, this is supposed to be a musical for people who hate musicals. I have yet to see Darren Lynn Bousman’s Repo! The Genetic Opera, though from what I hear it didn’t exactly spark new life into the movie biz. Schoolboys in Disgrace could be a refreshing break from conventionalism, filmed with a nitty-gritty low-budget styling. Goldthwait spun his own bittersweet rhymes with World’s Greatest Dad, and Schoolboys in Disgrace seems like it’d pack an entirely different heart while taking on a certain dark comedy type only he’s able to produce.

@Mark I loved the hell out of “Shakes”. I’m a sucker for dirt-black comedy and Goldthwait has that down pat, with added bitterness.
Did Goldthwait direct some episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live a couple of years ago?
