Leo – A Legend

Between last week’s Twilight & The Last Airbender and next week’s Inception & The Sorceror’s Apprentice, this week proves to be a lull in the Summer blockbuster lineup.  I don’t want to take anything away from Predators, Despicable Me, or The Kids Are All Right (Focus’s independent smash hit from Sundance), but let’s be honest, this week is kind of a trough in the roller coaster ride that is the Summer movie lineup.

I have just spent the past 10 minutes online trying come up with something to write, and I honestly could not find a thing. The main story on almost every entertainment website is that Lindsay Lohan is going to jail. In the words of me, “who the f cares.”  She is not even remotely interesting.  However, messing around did get me thinking. The biggest and most anticipated movie of the whole Summer opens globally next week: Inception. This is a Chris Nolan project, not about a comic superhero, and yet somehow topped the $200 million mark for budgeting.  Nolan, the master of the psycological thriller, is back again with another cerebral film that takes us inside the human mind and the world of dreams.  Insert Leonardo DiCaprio and you have yourself a smash.

Now, Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the greatest actors of this generation.  I’m not so sure we give him the credit he deserves. Sure, he gets insanely large paychecks and every middle school girl has his poster hanging on her wall (or they at least used to), but from a talent perspective, DiCaprio is among the elite of the elite.   He is one of the finest actors we have living today, and will undoubtedly win an Academy Award one day.  He is on my short list of well deserving actors without Oscar gold; you can add Jacquin Pheonix to that last as well.  His resume of film’s is in a class of its own.  There really is very little bad to say about his career. Even Growing Pains was an awesome TV show back in the day. Leo does it all. You know it, I know it, and he definitely knows it.

So in honor of his work and the not so distant release of Inception, and for lack of interest in Lindsay Lohan’s future in jail, we go through the 5 best DiCaprio movies of all time.

Good, but not Top 5 – What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Titanic, The Man in the Iron Mask, & Basketball Diaries

5.  The Aviator – His portrayal of Howard Hughes is electric and nearly took Oscar Gold.

4. Catch Me if You Can – He and Tom Hanks just looked like they had way too much fun doing this movie.

3. Gangs of New York – Remember the 5 Points in Pre-Civil War New York. Neither do I, but man does this movie make you feel it.

2. Blood Diamond – One of the most powerful and not so well known movies of the past 10 years. A must see.

1. The Departed – A Masterpiece

What do you think are Leo’s best movies?

  1. If you are just ranking his performance and ignoring the overall movie, Gangs of New York and Blood Diamond should be knocked off the list and replaced with Gilbert Grape and Bball Diaries. Daniel Day Lewis is who made Gangs so good, and the black dude in Blood Diamond was great.

  2. Georgie S Wazup Fellas

You are out of your mind – I disagree with the rankings…they should be as follows:

    1) Gangs of New York
    2) Man in the Iron Mask
    3) Titanic
    4) Blood Diamond
    5) Shutter Island

  3. Georgie Walnuts

No way you’re 2 and 3 ranks it that high. Man in the Iron Mask was too emsemble based, especially for a young Leo. And Titanic is more of Cameron’s show than anyones.

Have to disagree with your choices. Although, Leo is awesome in all his roles.
