Amy Adams Cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology Film

As has been reported here before, Paul Thomas Anderson has written and is directing a film about Scientology. Well, let me revise this statement, he has written and is directing a film kind of, sort of about Scientology.

I mean, don’t get me wrong– the film’s plot seems to very heavily take from the story of how Scientology came about, in that the potential movie centers on a man who returns from WWII in the 1950s and subsequently sets up an unconventional (to say the least) religion, one in which he is referred to as “the Master” (eerie, right?). The thing is, it seems that to label the film as one that documents the origins of Scientology is a bit iffy, as Anderson has yet to officially confirm that he took inspiration from the religion in question. In fact, he has yet to even officially confirm the name of the movie. But as IMDB has gone ahead and labeled the film The Master, (as has been rumored) I, too, will refer to Anderson’s upcoming feature by the same name.

So, as you can probably guess from the title of this post, Amy Adams has indeed been cast in the film. She is set to play the wife of the dauntingly-called Master, who will be played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Among other confirmed actors, Joaquin Phoenix is also set to play the Master’s right hand man, while Laura Dern has also been cast but in an as of yet unreleased role.

A very respectable cast, indeed! But even more interesting are the actors that are still rumored to be attached to The Master: Juliette Lewis, Elisabeth Moss and, wait for it, Giovanni Ribisi. Juliette Lewis would be a stellar addition to the cast because, well, she’s Juliette Lewis, but Giovanni Ribisi would be a hands-down catch! I mean, an actual Scientologist in a film about Scientology– How meta!

Either way, Anderson’s The Master is sure shaping up, and will definitely be an Oscar contender (ahem, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, Boogie Nights). According to IMDB, the film is expected to be released sometime in 2013, so we have a long wait ahead of us. But by God, it will be worth it. Or, rather, by L. Ron Hubbard, it will be worth it!
