Snap Review of What’s Your Number?

I’ll be quite honest. I was expecting the worst going into Mark Mylod’s What’s Your Number? This became especially clear when the friend I was with informed me of the movie’s very reputable score (not) of 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Twenty-two percent! I mean, this summer’s worst movie (hell even this year’s worst movie), One Day , even scored a 37%. This just did not bode well at all.
Maybe it was the fact that I was expecting so little, or maybe it was due to the early morning screening we went to, or maybe it was just because I was high on junior mints, but either way, I just didn’t think that What’s Your Number? was that bad. In fact, I may have even (gasp) enjoyed it.
What?! Yes, I said it. It’s just what’s not to enjoy? Anna Faris gave an as-usual funny, light performance, transforming a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy about a woman trying to find the one before she hits the (oh no!) number 20 on the people she’s slept with list, into something much more laugh-worthy and entertaining; I am not usually a fan of new Hollywood action star it man, Chris Evans, but I’m happy to say he (and his weird hair) did not manage to annoy me; and the movie’s supporting characters (Ari Graynor, Blythe Tanner, Joel McHale, Chris Pratt, Andy Samberg, Zachery Quinto, Martin Freeman, and Anthony Mackie) all added comedic elements and dynamics to the film. And as for the ultimate test for any movie purporting to be a comedy, I did laugh out loud more than just a couple times.
So there you have it. This isn’t a great movie at all, but I did enjoy it as much as I enjoy a fun rom-com. Definitely one of my favorites of this category this year. Strong statement? Well, it was a funny movie, and I’m standing by it.
RENT IT.
