Nothing gets my nostalgia running like finals time. And since I find myself in my early 20s, my nostalgia takes me as far back as the early 1990s. As finals season is upon us once again, so is my desire to relive the best decade in film, fashion and group bands: ah, the 1990s. How I miss you.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again– movies were just better then. I mean, come on. Hackers, Guarding Tess, and Weekend at Bernies II?! Could this decade get any better? Well, I’m happy you asked. Because, yes, yes it really can.
Please let me present for your consideration: Empire Records, the feel good movie about a bunch of teenagers who work at a local, independent record store. Doesn’t really sound so inspiring, right? Well, let me tell you: the movie, which stars Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, Debbie Mazar, Anthony LaPaglia, and Robin Tunney, is ripe (ripe!) with “Chills Down My Spine” moments. I mean, how could it not be? It’s about a bunch of teenagers coming of age!
There is one moment in particular, that just get the chills a-flowing. This scene comes at the end of the movie after all the plots have been arced and everyone’s issues have come to a head. In order to save their store from imminent franchise, they all decide to throw a block party. At said block party, Gina (Zellweger) finally gets to live her dream of singing in a band after relaying her very big fear of getting old without ever really trying because she’s too afraid of failing. Once Gina gets on stage though, not only can she really belt out the lyrics (so much so that I get chills just by listening to her), but also, because it’s a 90s movie, everything comes together and gets solved. Watching it now, I’m not sure if I get so many chills because I want this same sort of ending to my finals doom, or because I am writing on the same type of sugar high that she is singing about or because it really is that inspiring and great.
Either way, I suggest you watch this clip, as it guarantees to make you happy and leave you a little bit more inspired that you were before!
