Can Katherine Heigl Make A Good Film?

The other day I was watching TV and caught a trailer for another January dump-month movie starring Katherine Heigl, ‘One for the Money.’ It tells the story of Stephanie Plum (Heigl) who starts working at a bail-bond business where her first assignment puts her on the trail of a wanted local cop from her romantic past. So it’s ‘The Bounty Hunter’ with less famous people in it? While watching this trailer I started to get extremely angry and I couldn’t exactly figure out why, until I took a look at Miss Heigl’s resume and it all became clear. Katherine Heigl is incapable of making a good film.

Putting aside any personal issues with the actress (Dissing her ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ writers and bad-mouthing ‘Knocked Up’ for being sexist), I really didn’t have anything against her. I think she is a really capable actress who deserved her Emmy win for Best Supporting Actress in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and I think she is quite beautiful. That being said, it seems that after the hilarious Judd Apatow film ‘Knocked Up,’ Heigl decided to hop into a bulldozer and absolutely destroy her career.

Let’s take a look at her post-‘Knocked Up’ roster via Rotten Tomatoes, though this isn’t an exact measurement of “bulldozing” her career, shall we?

’27 Dresses’ – 41%

‘The Ugly Truth’ – 13%

‘Killers’ – 11%

‘Life As We Know It’ – 28%

‘New Year’s Eve’ – 7%

You know you’re in trouble when your best film in 4 years is ’27 Dresses.’ Yet somehow, Katherine Heigl still finds work! Like I said before, I do think the woman has talent, just not for picking movies. After all of these disasters has no one thought to sit her down and give her a good slapping? Maybe I’m being too harsh, I just think it’s sad that someone with such talent is putting it to so much waste!

And it doesn’t look like her career is going to get any better in the future. ‘One For The Money’ looks absolutely dreadful; it’s being released in January, and has some early negative buzz surrounding it.

So I ask you Banters, is there any hope for Katherine Heigl’s career? I long for the days when she used to have me at the edge of my seat while watching ‘Greys Anatomy’ or crying from laughter in ‘Knocked Up.’ Please Katherine, ditch the rom-coms and actually read a script before accepting the role!

  1. I think the trailer for One For The Money looks half decent and it is really nothing like the Bounty Hunter. It is based on the books by Janet Evanovich (18 of them) which have sold over 75 million copies. The first, written some 20 years ago is what the movie is based on. Just because she happens to be a Bounty Hunter after a former flame that is where the similarities really end.

I also believe her movies are unduly harshly treated by critics. Life As We Know It for example was pretty decent – a solid 60% for sure.

Regardless of what you think of them she gets work because most of those movies had huge returns on a small budget. Ugly Truth took over $200 million worldwide on a budget of $35m, 27 Dresses took $160m on a budget of $30m, Life As We Know It over $100m on a budget of $35m. Killers was pretty poor for sure and barely made back its bigger budget – and New Year’s Eve was more of a cameo role. Everyone in Hollywood was in that movie so you can’t really pin it on Heigl. So that is why she is making movies and is in top 3 or 4 highest paid actresses in Hollywood at the moment making about 15m a picture.

But agreed – enough of the rom coms – she is an excellent dramatic actress. She has announced a couple of thrillers (Kill Switch for example) and some more interesting dramatic projects – including something with HBO.
