MTV to Develop a Scream TV Series

Okay so technically this isn’t entirely movie news, more TV related, but seeing as how it is a film-to-tv adaptation I think it qualifies. Not to mention it has to do with my all-time favorite movie franchise ‘Scream.’ But don’t let that information fool you, I have some serious concerns with this news.

It’s been a little over a year since the 4th entry hit theaters and things have been quiet on the ‘Scream’ front for awhile now. There were initially talks of a 5th and possibly 6th to follow but with creator Kevin Williamson having no interest in returning and director Wes Craven not wanting to return without Williamson, it kind of seemed unlikely. But it doesn’t look like we’ve seen the last of this franchise, it just might be on a different format.

MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley have announced that they are currently in the early stages of development on a TV series based on the ‘Scream’ franchise. That is pretty much the only information we have been given other than they are shopping around for writers for the project (did they even bother asking Kevin Williamson?). Now like I stated previously, ‘Scream’ is my favorite film franchise and I would absolutely love to see it in some form again, I’m just not sure if television is the right place for it, let alone MTV! My main issue is that ‘Scream’ is not just a horror film, it is self-referential. Meaning the characters are knowingly in a horror FILM and reference other horror FILMS, so how does that work on TV? Are the characters going to quote famous horror TV shows? Are there even that many of those?

Like I said there is very little information on this but I am already confused as to how they are going to pull it off. I have no doubt that MTV can have a successful slasher television show, their original films ‘My Super Psycho Sweet 16′ and its sequel were both way better than I expected, so I know the potential is there. But why does it have to be based off of ‘Scream’? Make it an original!

Anyway, for all I know this project will never get out of the development stages and we won’t ever have the answers to my questions. But just in case it does end up happening, what do you think Banters? Would you be interested in checking this show out?

  1. You really make it appear really easy together with your presentation however I find this matter to be really one thing that I feel I might never understand. It seems too complex and very wide for me. I’m looking forward to your next put up, I will try to get the hold of it!
