“THE WAY, WAY BACK” Guaranteed To Rock

If I just tossed the names Jim Rash and Nat Faxon around, you might not know who I’m talking about. These guys:

But if I said “that guy who mocked Angelina Jolie’s sexy leg pose in his acceptance speech for the Academy Award in Best Adapted Screenplay, you’d say “oooooh that guy!” That guy was Jim Rash. Remember?

(My apologies for the weird Mask, and Joker cameos) He’s very funny, and I know this from having both seen him on television (Community, Reno 911), and films (Balls of Fury), but I have also seen him live. He’s one of the players at the Groundlings improvisational theater in West Hollywood, and the guy knows timing. Being an actor and excluding yourself from a film you’ve written is a noble move, and that’s exactly what he did in The Descendants. Although the George Clooney film was a drama, it was also very funny. I’ll never forget the shot of Clooney running down the street, feeling very much like an out-of-shape middle-aged man. Well, I have good news for you banterers, the comedy writing duo (Jim Rash and Nat Faxon) are back, and are delivering a comedy to us next year. This will be their directorial debut. The film is called The Way, Way Back.

As you can see in the still posted at the top of this article, the film stars Steve Carrel and Sam Rockwell. I have always loved Steve Carrel, even before he played a heavy hitting dramatic role in Crazy, Stupid, Love I knew the “comic” actor was three-dimensional. And Sam Rockwell? The man is incredible. What film has he been in where he’s been nothing less than incredible? Moon? Try again. Conviction? He brought so much life and energy to every scene he was in. Charlie’s Angels? Come on. No one has swagger like him.

So the film is a comedy. Maya Rudolph will be in it as well – also a former groundling –, and also Amanda Peet. It’s supposed to be about a teenager who, over the summer, comes into his own due to a friendship between him and the park manager he works for. We don’t know much, really, about what it’s about. We know only to be very excited about the cast and crew that are bringing it to us.
