With award season well underway, award shows seem to happen every other weekend. This weekend saw the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is not only probably the most fun (or maybe even narcissistic) of the awards shows as SAG actors are the ones voting for themselves, but also the SAG Awards are considered the kind of midway point between the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Rather, if the SAG awards differ dramatically from the Golden Globes, well then, we’ve got a real race on our hands.

Each year when Academy Award nominations are announced I find myself in a similar predicament. I wait and wait, hoping that this year will be different. Hoping that this year, they don’t overlook something as integral as nominating Ryan Gosling as Best Actor for his stellar performance in Blue Valentine (or in Lars and the Real Girl while we’re at it) or nominating Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere for Best Picture or even Best Director. But alas, this year is no different in terms of my crushed hopes and dreams. This year, I waited and waited, and, yet, find myself with a familiar feeling– a mixture of an expected lackluster letdown with that of realized betrayal.

Some of the nominations were deserved for sure. I, as I’m sure many others, would have been incensed if Rooney Mara did not receive a nomination for her downright outstanding performance in Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I would have also felt similarly if Terrence Malick as well as his film, Tree of Life, were not recognized for the Best Director and Best Picture categories, respectively, the way they were during this year’s Golden Globes. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Academy’s decision to nominate Mellisa McCarthy for her supporting role in Bridesmaids, not that this was my favorite movie this year (not by far) but it does not go unnoticed that they are breaking ground by nominating a television actress for her role in a comedic film, especially an actress who does not fit the typical Hollywood standards in terms of looks.

But, those expected and deserved nominations aside, I still cannot get over some of things the Academy decided to pass on. For example, this year, the Academy decided to nominate only nine films (of the slotted ten) for the Best Picture category, probably coming off the heals of the criticism they received for nominating a movie like The Blind Side two years before. So they only nominate nine films– The Help, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and even War Horse being among these nine. And in doing so, they chose to overlook The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, We Need to Talk About Kevin and Drive? Or they just didn’t think that any of these films could even be considered in the same category as The Help? I mean, come on! The Oscars are supposed to be the definitive of the best films each year, right? Well then, we must be seeing different movies under the same name.

And that’s not all. Where were Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks’ nominations for their roles in Drive? And perhaps most frustrating of all, where was Tilda Swinton’s more-than-deserved Best Actress nomination for her amazing performance in We Need to Talk About Kevin?

And I’m not a crazy feminist here, but in a sea of male Best Director nominees, it would have not only been nice, but also much deserved to see Lynne Ramsay nominated for her film We Need to Talk About Kevin. Or, if that’s too risque for you, what about David Fincher? Did he really not deserve to be recognized for his take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

Yes, I admit I had high hopes–perhaps even too high of hopes seeing as I was also gunning for an unexpected Elizabeth Olsen Best Actress nomination for her breakout role in Martha Marcy May Marlene– but the Academy proved just how remiss they are with the films and performances they decided to leave out. Instead, the Academy went the safe route. A Best Film category filled with movies made by Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, and Martin Scorsese? How unoriginal.

What does this mean? Nothing, really. I will continue watching the Oscars, and continue hoping that one year, just one year they will get it right. But, sadly, this year ain’t that year.

Waking up the morning after the Golden Globes is a little like waking up the morning after Christmas. All the excitement leading up to this momentous event– all the red carpet anticipation, the hours spent trying to guess the winners, the money bartered once you’re convinced of said winners– has, at once, come to an end. But, alas, the Golden Globes has one saving grace that ol’ Christmas does not: the Golden Globes are a precursor to the Academy Awards, a dry-run for the real reason award season happens. And with that, all the excitement that has come and gone with the passing of the Golden Globes has become instantly worth it. It’s the Golden Globes, after all, which serve as the only real form of prediction for the Oscars. A review, then, of the Golden Globes become necessary, if only to increase the excitement and anticipation of the impending Oscars.

After looking again at a list of winners, there are a few things that immediately stand out. Yes, many awards went to the obvious choices– no one was really that surprised that Jean Dujarin took home the best actor award in a comedy or musical for his silent performance in The Artist, or that Meryl Streep was the top pick for best actress in a drama for her role in The Iron Lady, or even that The Artist was chosen as the best comedy or musical film (God, was Harvey Weinstein having his heyday).

But then, like any good award show, there were the shocks that let us all eagerly anticipating the Oscars know that we have a real race ahead of us. For example, is George Clooney really the top pick for the Best Actor category for his lead performance in The Descendants over his friend, Brad Pitt’s role (and higher-praised at that) in Moneyball? Or what about the best director award? It came as a shock to me (and I’m sure to many) that given as many awards The Artist was slated to take home, its director, Michel Hazanavicius, lost it to Martin Scorsese for his animated Hugo. Will The Artist actually win all the Oscars its slated to? (I not-so-secretly hope not).

Shocks aside, you also have to wonder if the obvious choice-wins were the Awards Season’s way of throwing us off our game for the Oscars. For example, will Meryl Streep actually take home the Best Actress Oscar, or, in a (probably deserving upset) will the award go to Rooney Mara for her amazing performance in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or even Viola Davis in The Help? And with Octavia Spencer winning the Best Supporting Actress Globe, does that mean that Jessica Chastain has a better chance of winning any Oscar she may be nominated for (after all, she was in a staggering number of well-received films this year)?

I guess there is no way to tell until first, the Oscar nominations are released, and second, until the actual Oscars happen. But let me tell you, if Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life is snubbed the way it was at the more viewer-friendly Golden Globes, the award show is going to have some ‘splaining to do.

Overall, I thought the Golden Globes were great this year (due in large part to its three-year-running great host Ricky Gervais). Hopefully, the Oscars will learn a thing or two from this event. Until this can be discerned, I thank the Golden Globes (and the Hollywood Foreign Press) for a good night full of some expected awards and some shocks.

While the Directors Guild Awards are not necessarily the most star-studded award ceremony this season, they are one of the biggest predictors of who will take home the Oscar for Best Director.

Here’s a look at the 5 nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film for 2011:

Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris

David Fincher, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Michel Hazanavicious, The Artist

Alexander Payne, The Descendants

Martin Scorsese, Hugo

Out of the nominees I’d say Scorsese, Payne, and Hazanavicious were definitely predictable. ‘The Artist’ has been raved about for being so unique (black and white, silent film), ‘Hugo’ is receiving a lot of praise for being such a change of form for Scorsese, and ‘The Descendants’ has been labeled by many as the best film of the year (I’ve seen it and while it wasn’t my favorite film of 2011, I definitely loved it).

Although Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’ has received a lot of positive buzz some don’t believe it is one of the top 5 films. I personally have not seen the film so I can’t really pass judgment, but I have been hearing some pretty fantastic things about this underrated film.
A welcome surprise for me was the inclusion of David Fincher for ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’, which was somewhat absent from the SAG and Golden Globe Awards but seems to be picking up some more steam (at the box office and with award shows). This was definitely one of my favorite films of the year and even if it doesn’t get the win Fincher deserves the recognition for making such a faithful and fresh adaptation.

It seems many people think Nicolas Winding Refn and Steven Spielberg were robbed for ‘Drive’ and ‘War Horse’ respectively.

If I had to take a guess, I would go with Michel Hazanavicious for ‘The Artist.’ I haven’t seen this movie yet but it takes a really talented director to make a black and white silent film enjoyable in 2011. Kudos to him!

Congrats to all the nominees! The winner will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 in Hollywood.

Who do you think was the best director of 2011 Banters?

When it comes to the Oscars, young is out. Old is the new old!

A ‘trailer’ for the 84th Academy Awards has recently been released online. And guess what? It’s for the kiddies.

Well, no, it’s not. It’s an attempt to make the kiddies think that the adults are funny and hip. Did you know adults have seen actions/suspense movies? They totally have! They know the stereotypes! They love cameos like the younger folk! Megan Fox!

However, when your cameos include Vinnie Jones and Robin Williams, you may still be alienating a younger demographic. Because while I’m sure many kids loved Snatch and Good Will Hunting, it is still hard to care that either of them show up.

“It’s obvious he transformed into a yeti!” – another classic Robin Williams line

This year there is no need to skew the Oscars younger. Their best bet is to focus on next year. Billy Crystal will have four good jokes, so that’ll win the older demographic. With Best Picture nominations likely to include a silent film, one set in the 1960’s south, and one about the death of a spouse, it seems maybe children and young adults may not be tuning in anyway? Probably not? Is anyone else getting that vibe?

“I hope Albert Nobbs wins!” – no one under the age of 80

But don’t fret. This trailer ended with a perfectly placed in 2012 texting joke. Oh, MAN! Only good stuff here. I’m sure there will be more of these before the actual show on February 26th, so if you enjoyed this, lucky you. For the rest of us, we’ll talk in 2013.

One of my favorite award shows of the year, the Golden Globes, have just announced their official nominations this morning and I am pretty happy with the results. While yesterday’s SAG award nominations were a bit of a let down for me, the Golden Globes seemed to get most things right in my book!

Well, Banterers, it’s officially that time of year. The air is crisp, the trees are bare, and there’s a slight skip in my step. Yes, award season has begun.

How can you be so sure that I’m not mixing said crispness and bare trees just for regular old winter? Well, because The Film Critics Awards (Los Angeles, Boston, and New York) have just been released– each year, marking the start of this most exciting season!

To summarize, the LA Film Critics awarded The Descendents with the coveted Best Picture Award, Terrence Malick for this year’s Tree of Life with Best Director, Michael Fassbender (with a whopping four performances this year in A Dangerous Method, Jane Eyre, Shame, and X-Men: First Class) with Best Actor, Yun Jung-Hee in an out-of-left-field-move with Best Actress for her lead role in the South Korean film Poetry, Christopher Plummer for his role in Beginners with Best Supporting Actor, and praised new-comer Jessica Chastain with Best Supporting Actress for her slew of roles in a downright impressive six films this year (Coriolanus, The Debt, The Help, Take Shelter, Texas Killing Fields, and Tree of Life). For a full list of winners and runner-ups, click here.

In Boston, things went a little differently, with The Artist taking Best Picture, Martin Scorsese winning Best Director for his animated film Hugo, Brad Pitt getting Best Actor for his role in Moneyball, Michelle Williams awarded with Best Actress for her role in the film My Week With Marilyn, Albert Brooks taking Best Supporting Actor for Drive, and (truly shocking, but well deserved) Melissa McCarthy winning Best Supporting Actress for the summer comedy Bridesmaids. A full list of winners can be found here.

Serving as almost the middle ground between the two cities, New York gave The Artist the Best Picture accolade, Michel Hazanavicius the Best Director award for The Artist, Brad Pitt the Best Actor trophy for his roles in Moneyball and Tree of Life, Meryl Streep an expected Best Actress award for The Iron Lady, Albert Brooks the Best Supporting Actor accolade for Drive, and Jessica Chastain the Best Supporting Actress award for her roles in Tree of Life, The Help, and Take Shelter. Click here for a full list.

Well, that’s quite an array of wins if you ask me, and quite a start to the season. To be honest, I’m not too impressed by these awards. We get it: The Artist and its director, Michel Hazanavicius, are huge contenders for the Oscar race, but could it be (gasp!) only because the film is a silent one in a world of sound films? I mean, will The Artist take home the coveted Best Picture Oscar only because it dared to try new, er, old technique?

The Best Actor and Actress awards were all over the place too. Even though Brad Pitt took home two of the awards, I wouldn’t bank on him for the Oscar. I’m more inclined to agree with Los Angeles’ pick, Michael Fassbender, and as much as I would be inclined to give Charlize Theron a nod for her stunning portrait in Young Adult, for betting purposes, I’ll stick with Meryl Streep for the Best Actress award (I mean, who doesn’t love her?!).

Here’s hoping Jessica Chastain really does come out on top with a Best Supporting Actress award for one of her great performances in this year’s six films. And as much as I’d like to see Albert Brooks win an award for his turn as the evil character in Drive, the Academy loves Christopher Plummer (and rightly so, I mean, he’s Captain Von Trapp), so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him take home the award.

I guess only time will tell, but for right now, it sure is fun hypothesizing.

18 years ago a terrible tragedy occurred resulting in the brutal death of three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. In the wake of this tragedy three teenage boys were arrested, tried, and eventually convicted of these harrowing crimes. So why is any of this relevant? Well thanks to some talented folks at HBO, they got it all on camera. So far there have been three individual documentaries following the three convicted who were nicknamed The West Memphis 3. If any of you have seen the documentaries, it becomes quite obvious that these three teens were most likely innocent and it was a modern day witch hunt. Whether it’s actual fact or the documentary was a little biased I do not know, but regardless this August the three were released from prison after close to 18 years, which many in Hollywood were thrilled about.

But not everyone was ecstatic about this. You see the parents of one of the deceased little boys from 18 years ago are lobbying to have the Oscars exclude the West Memphis 3 documentary from consideration. This would be the 3rd film in the series, ‘Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory.’ In the letter to the Academy they write:

“Because of public pressure that exploded due to gross misrepresentations of fact in the two previous documentaries, Michael’s killers were unjustly able to enter into a plea agreement, were released from prison and now pose additional threats to society,” the letter reads. “We implore the Academy not to reward our child’s killers and the directors who have profited from one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated under the guise of a documentary film.”

Director Joe Berlinger defended his film and stood by that the 3 were innocent but he did understand where the parents are coming from. “We feel tremendous sorrow for them…We understand why a film that comes to a different conclusion than they do would make them feel this way. We stand by our films. We fervently believe the West Memphis Three are innocent.”

To be honest, I have sympathy for all parties involved in this terrifying ordeal, but I’m not entirely sure what that has to do with the Oscars. No one ever said they award the most moral films, it’s about filmmaking, and if it’s a well-made documentary it deserves to be recognized.

What do you think Banters?

Well this is a charming new development! Following the recent controversial exit of Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy as producer and host respectively of the 2012 Academy Awards, their replacements have already been announced!

Bryan Grazer will be stepping in for Ratner which is ironic considering he also produced Ratner and Murphy’s latest film ‘Tower Heist.’ This isn’t too shocking as Brian Grazer produces almost everything in Hollywood these days. Seriously folks, check out his IMDB page it’s stacked!

A little bit more surprising is Billy Crystal stepping in as Eddie Murphy’s replacement. The rumors all began after Crystal tweeted, “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.” Soon after his tweet the Academy officially confirmed it.

Although I was surprised by this news, I guess it was an easy decision for everyone involved. This will mark the NINTH time that Billy Crystal has hosted the ceremony, so when crunched for time, he’s an obvious choice to fill in since it’s not exactly his first rodeo.

How do you feel about this Banters? I for one am thrilled. I was never that excited with Eddie Murphy to begin with, I think he has made terrible decisions in his career as of late and I no longer find him to be that funny. And while Billy Crystal also hasn’t been featured in too many projects in the last decade, whenever he has graced the stage in the past I have always enjoyed him so I’m all for this switch!

The short list of animated movies eligible for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar has been released. Usually this is not news, but this year it is since Cars 2 is clearly not the front runner.

Most years, the Pixar film wins as it should. The last four years winners were Toy Story 3 (2010), Up (2009), WALL-E (2008), and Ratatouille (2007). Who’s going to argue with those? Nobody! Because they’re great! This year, though, Pixar decided to go in a new direction: uninteresting. I’m both mad AND disappointed. Yeah. Think about that.

But, it does leave room for other to take home the award. Who you wonder? So do I! Of the eighteen, I can safely predict Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Gnomeo and Juliet, The Smurfs, Hoodwinked Too! and Mars Needs Moms are not going to make the final cut. Cars 2 will probably make the list due to the coattails of the other great Pixar films.

There are some films that are likely to have a pretty good shot including Rango, Kung-Fu 2, and Rio. Plus the recent success of Shrek (the first to take home the Best Animated Feature in 2001) spin-off Puss in Boots could really turn into Oscar gold.

There are plenty of foreign films I really know nothing about such as Alois Nebel, Wrinkles, and A Cat in Paris. If anyone knows anything about these or highly recommends them please let me know.

However, what interests me the most is the prospect of The Adventures of Tintin being nominated or possibly winning the award. Last week I wrote an article about the overseas triumph of the film and wonder if it could translate into an Oscar on the Spielberg and Jackson names. This would be a huge boost for the motion capture animation as a whole, maybe even saving the genre.

Nominations will not be announced until January 24, 2012, so I guess it’s speculation until then.
