Early Review on Avatar

The $500 million monster James Cameron project, Avatar, will hit theaters this Friday. The $500 million is a total budget amount  including both production and advertising, and is the most expensive movie ever made.  The hype bubble building for this movie will defuse Friday when you, me, and your neighbor will be able to check it out.  The lucky few who caught a screening were nice enough to share their thoughts.

This is not a spoiler. In fact, I have not seen the movie and don’t want to spoil it for myself. The following is a small bit from some various sites and critics we follow.

Todd McCarthy of Variety writes  – “Twelve years after “Titanic,” which still stands as the all-time B.O. champ, Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see.” Click here for a full review.

Katey Rich of Cinemablend.com writes – “Cameron has returned to tell us that all we need is a slight and earnest story, a few good characters to carry it along, and thrilling visuals to sweep us all away. Avatar has it all. It’s great to have him back.” Click here for a full review.

Lou Lumenick of the New York Post writes – “Part eco-fable, part “Dances With Wolves” in intergalactic drag and part kick-ass action flick (à la “Aliens”) with a decidedly left-leaning political agenda, Cameron’s first movie since “Titanic” may sometimes speak in Velveeta, but it’s rarely less than absorbing and never boring over its nearly three-hour length.” Click here for a full review.

Well, there you have 3 reviews. All of which are good. I think whether reviews were good or bad for this movie, people were going to see it.  That’s besides the point. We know the movie is good, we know that Cameron is a master, and we know that the movie has been nominated for a ton of awards already.

Let us know your thoughts when you see Avatar.

The Reviews Are In: ‘The Lovely Bones’ is a Bomb

When reading about the movies this winter that will likely be nominated for Oscars in February, there are about three that constantly come up: Up In The Air, Precious and The Lovely Bones. However I have a feeling that Bones will soon be swiped off that list.

Though Peter Jackson’s highly-anticipated film (where he once again plays writer/director), and his first major one since 2005’s King Kong, doesn’t officially premiere nationwide until January 15th, the first review came from Sun Online critic The Sneak on Rotten Tomatoes November 24th. He called The Lovely Bones “[Jackson's] most mature, self-assured and visually dazzling release.” Cool, right? This is going to be good!

However, Variety’s Todd McCarthy (the first critique I read and actually cared about for the film) posted their review that same day scathing it: “Jackson undermines solid work from a good cast with show-offy celestial evocations that severely disrupt the emotional connections with the characters.” Only 16 reviews are in as of this post and Peter Jackson’s latest film has a 56% rotten rating. Don’t remember that happening to District 9.

I’ll undoubtedly be seeing The Lovely Bones despite the dismissal reviews in January, however it’s just a shame that Bones is performing so poorly. My prediction for Best Picture winner was never Bones to begin with, although I thought this looked pretty cool. But hey, for all we know the heat for the movie could be over, and if it’s not then it wouldn’t be the first time a heavily-hyped movie was left to sizzle (9, anyone?).

Early Reviews on New Moon

Ok, I’ll admit it, I’m not at all excited to see this movie. One, I never read the books, and two, I liked this story better when it was called Harry Potter. Anyways, I know the rest of the world is absolutely in love with this story. Both kids and adults have already either seen the movie at midnight or have tickets to see it for sometime this weekend. Thus, it is my duty to report what some of the critics are saying.

Trainspotting buy

So before I do that, all I’m saying is that this movie has been receiving not-so-hot feedback. Rotten Tomatoes at this exact moment

, has it at a 30%. Of course this is subject to change, but 30% uhhhhh SUCKS. Sorry to dissapoint; not that it will matter though. This movie is bound to clock $100 million this weekend.

Roger Ebert says – “The characters in this movie should be arrested for loitering with intent to moan. Never have teenagers been in greater need of a jump-start. Granted some of them are more than 100 years old, but still: their charisma is by Madame Tussaud.” Click here for a full a review.

A Bunch of Amateurs full movie Richard Roeper

says - ”Despite his 107 years on the planet, Edward Cullen doesn’t seen to have absorbed much in the way of wisdom, maturity or ingenuity. I mean, here he is, repeating senior year in high school for something like the 90th time, and he’s STILL  a petulant, self-absorbed teenager, sitting in the back of the class and scoffing at yet another lesson about “Romeo and Juliet.” You’d think by now he would have figured out a way to pass himself off as a young-looking 21-year-old rock star—or hey, maybe he could put his supernatural skills to use by turning himself into a better golfer than Tiger Woods. Anything to break the monotony.” Click here for a full review.

20 Million Miles to Earth hd

Kenneth Turan of the LA Times says – “This is the last time you’ll ever see me,” Edward Cullen says to Bella Swan. As if…..”Edward is as good as his word and “New Moon” suffers as a result. Constrained by the plot of the novel, the film keeps the two lovers apart for quite a spell, robbing the project of the crazy-in-love energy that made “Twilight,” the first entry in the series, such a guilty pleasure.” Click here Dead Poets Society movie download for a full review.

There are 3 opinions. All of which are not so good.

Nick will be seeing it this weekend and will post his review as soon as he does.

Jump on the Oscar boat everyone, because “Where the Wild Things Are” is being more than well received.  The new Spike Jonze film arrives in theaters this Friday along with “Law Abiding Citizen.” “Where the Wild Things Are” is actually a 9 sentence, 330 word childrens book, that has been made into a 100 minute film. Some are calling it a “monsterpiece.” That is literally the term they are using.

Harry Knowles, of aintitcool.com says…

“Spike Jonze’s WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is a staggeringly brilliant encapsulation of the intent and contents of Sendak’s book, but more so… of childhood itself. The result is a film of immense and unquestionable power that has the power to shake you more than any of you are really expecting.”

Christy Lemire of New York MetroMix Like Mike hd

says “Where the Wild Things Are is certainly as suitable for children as the book that inspired it, but it’ll probably roar even more loudly to adults in the audience who aren’t ashamed to get a little nostalgic about their own childhoods.”

Whisper dvd I will be sure to see this movie. With a star studded cast of voices including James Gandolfini, “Where the Wild Things Are” is being given a lot of Oscar buzz.

Only one movie this year so far I consider Oscar worthy; that film being “The Hurt Locker.” Perhaps “Where Wild The Things are” will join that boat. I will revert back when I get to see it.

Will you be seeing “Where the Wild Things Are”?

Early Reviews on District 9

Well Banterers, District 9

is here.  I have read a couple reviews on it as well as discussing the movie with some people that have seen it already, and reviews are mixed.  The Banter review will be on the site by Sunday, and we will notify you about it.  This way you guys can check out what we think.  Craig is actually making his maiden voyage back to NY this weekend.  So we will be attending a movie together for the first time since the Banter was founded in January 2009.   Anyways, back to District 9. Let’s run through the word on the street about this movie.

Rafer Guzman of Newsday says – “What the sci-fi action flick “District 9″ lacks in famous faces it makes up for with sheer imagination. It’s an unlikely summer blockbuster, shot with a South African cast on a restrained budget. It’s also a refreshing blast of original filmmaking.” Click here for a complete review.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times says – ““District 9” does a lot of things right, including giving us aliens to remind us not everyone who comes in a spaceship need be angelic, octopod or stainless steel. They are certainly alien, all right. It is also a seamless merger of the mockumentary and special effects (the aliens are CGI). And there’s a harsh parable here about the alienation and treatment of refugees.” Click here for a complete review.

The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel hd Peter Travers of Rolling Stone writes – “District 9, with a chump-change budget of $30 million, soars on the imagination of its creators. This baby has the stuff to end the movie summer on a note of dazzle and distinction.” Click here for a complete review.

However, I spoke to my father about this movie at around 3pm on Friday. He is a big science fiction buff and was fairly excited for this film.  Let’s just say he is a bit of Trekkie.  Well, he told me he literally walked out of the theaters 1 hour 15 minutes into the film.  He said that it was just not his thing, he couldn’t take the movie, and things were not moving along well.  I’ll be sure to tell him how the movie ended after I get done seeing it.

So we have an interesting array of opinions. The critics seem to like while one member of the sci-fi fan base did not. I would expect to see the complete opposite. Typically the sci-fi fan base likes films (or will at least go see them)  despite awful reviews from critics.  I’m not saying my father represents the entire sci-fi base, but it’s really interesting to point out that a true sci-fi fan was not into this movie.

We will put our snap review of the film up this weekend.

Also, check out this link for the entire weekend lineup. We have a lot of movies opening up this weekend; lots to see. What will you be seeing?
