With the Top 5 Movies being posted yesterday, we at TheMovieBanter would like to run through the worst 5 movies of the Summer. Like we mentioned yesterday, Summer 2009 was full of big budget action films and highly anticipated sequels.  Lots of cash was spent on bringing back comic heroes, robots, wizards, and over-exposed comedians, creating some of the biggest film disappointments of the year.  Trailers surfaced in Winter and Spring generating lots of hype for the Summer lineup.  We go in with high hopes, and often leave unhappy, unsatisfied and $12 poorer (depending on where you’re from).  Let’s take a tour through the poorly written scripts, the over hyped trailers, the tacky magazine headlines, and the excessive spending that make up the 5 worst films of Summer 2009.

The Baader Meinhof Complex trailer Honorable Mention – Wolverine, G.I. Joe, The Collector

5. Land of the Lost

The reason that this film doesn’t sink lower on the list was that everyone kind of assumed it would suck.  Also, Danny McBride is absolutely hilarious.  Sure, Will Ferrell is getting old, but we all know what to expect with his films.  The thing that bothers me the most is that how could a studio decide to pony up $100 million to make this movie.  What were they thinking? That’s like buying Enron stock after being tipped of the fraud and bankruptcy.  Were they even trying here?  I thought this movie had some potential. I was mistaken. Land of the Lost sits at number 5 on our list, and isn’t lower only because everyone, including fans and critics, said it would suck.

4. Bruno

buy Fashions of 1934

With the success of Borat, Sasha Baron Cohen returned to the big screen in a yellow swimsuit, a fishnet top, and a microphone, touring America in search of flamboyant homosexuality.  What he gained in Borat, he lost in Bruno. What did we love about Borat? It was fresh, it was clever, it was hilarious, and it kept our attention for the entirety of the film.  When writing this script, it seemed that Cohen sat down and had the sole objective of trying to be more inappropriate, repulsive, and outrageous compared to that of Borat.  Sadly, Borat flirted on the line between inappropriately funny and distasteful.  Bruno crossed that line.  Angry film goers stormed out of theaters demanding their money back.  Borat at least had some plot line. Bruno was a messy collaboration of skits that offer nothing new from Cohen; simply said, no substance.  A lot of us had high hopes for Bruno, and we were dissatisfied with the outcome, leaving Bruno at number 4 on our list.

3.  Terminator Salvation

All I need to say is ‘oh man.’  Once Bale went loony tunes on set, the word on the street for this movie was not good.  Even Terminator 3 – “Rise of the Machines” was a terrible idea and an awful movie; I wanted to rise from my seat and terminate the projector.  Who in their right mind decided to green light another one? Terminator Salvation failed to redeem the franchise that Arnold and James Cameron had so brilliantly created back in the 80’s and early 90’s.  This Summer was the Summer of the Christian Bale pay check; he sacrificed performing in solid movies for the sake of his bank account. Terminator Salvation was given an excessive budget, was too loud, was poorly written, and was plain stupid to watch.  Please let this franchise die in peace.  Terminator Salvation falls at number 3 on our list.

2. Public Enemies

download Landspeed movie

The bizarre thing in Public Enemies was that it actually looked good from the trailer. How could they screw up a movie directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale? Well, they did. And, what do you know, Bale makes his second appearance on the list that nobody wants to be on.  I think my shock to how bad this movie was, exceeded the boredom I suffered.  The love story between Depp (John) and Marion Cotillard (Billie) went something like this – Cotillard: “Oh John, I dunno, I’m just some poor innocent girl. I’m confused. I’m insecure. Uhh, I dunno.” Depp: “I’m Johnny Depp, I’m so cool, I like stealing money, you’re coming with me…Now.” Cotillard:” Ok.”  I was more let down in this movie than any movie this Summer.  2.5 hours of rambling tommy guns, chaotic scenes, characters who we could not identify with nor did we know, and a female beating scene that pretty much came out of nowhere. This movie is a stain on Depp’s career and left Bale’s career somewhere in the narrows.  Bale better be itching to start the next Batman, thus he can star in a movie that is actually good. Public Enemies is #2 on our worst movies of the Summer.

1.Year One

The Banter’s very own Craig Kessler had anything but good things to say about this film. Comic genius Harold Ramis, the film’s writer and director, left his genius at the door for this one.  He has come a long way since Caddy Shack, Stripes and Ghostbusters.  Jack Black and Michael Cera are uncomfortable to watch on screen. In fact, Michael Cera’s awkward gimic has run its course.  He plays the same guy in every movie; hey man, you’re getting old.  On a side note, Cera seems to be the lone remaining hold out from an “Arrested Development” movie.  Man has fame gotten to his head. Anyways, Craig says “this movie is the worst movie of the year” thus far.  This movie fails in every way possible. If you saw it, I feel bad for you…If you’re thinking about it, please do not waste your money or time.  This isn’t worth the toilet paper you use to wipe with.  In fact, it’s not worth half that price.  Ramis, Black and Cera …do yourselves a favor…buy all the copies of this film and go have a bond fire.  Year One Can-Can move is the worst movie of the Summer and the worst movie of the year thus far.

Superlatives:

Most disappointing movie – Public Enemies

Most “This movie should have been better” – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Most “It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t that bad” – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Stone & Ed divx

Most “I know you all thought it sucked, but I kind of liked it” – tie with Angels & Demons and The Taking of Pelham 1.2.3

Most “It was good, but why does everyone think it was amazing?” – Inglorious Basterds

What are you thoughts?

What was your Favorite Bruno Skit?

Bruno is still the hot topic of debate with the movie crowd for its outlandish skits and homo erotic scenes.  The debate for whether or not the movie was quality or not will go on for awhile.  In my video review of Bruno, I mentioned how it is a funny movie, but clearly not as good as Borat.  That seems to be the consensus throughout much of the word of mouth.  Even social media tools like Twitter could have pushed this neutrality opinion around, maybe even hurting the movie.  Regardless of how much it made, there were still very funny scenes, even if they were fewer than in Borat.  It also doesn’t help when the studio removes what was probably a very funny Michael Jackson scene

Gone Baby Gone film

even if it would have been tasteless and bad timing.

This may end up being a movie that is funnier to watch on DVD than in theaters with the deleted scenes accounting for much of the humor that was most likely left off the rated R movie version.  Out of the scenes that were in the movie, which was your favorite?

Fear of a Black Hat dvdrip

1. When he interviews Paula Abdul and makes his Mexican workers act as a table and chairs as he performs his interview of her?

Stone of Destiny hd

2. When Bruno interviews the terrorist?

3. When Bruno brings his newly adopted black baby named OJ on to a talk show?

Twelve Monkeys buy Last of the Living movie 4. When Bruno interviews an Alabama state government official?

Resurrecting the Champ release

The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin video

5. The ending MMA scene (although it was clearly scripted)

6. Other?

These are just a few of the skits that Bruno performed and although some may have been more set up than was the case in Borat, they still added to the humor.  Clearly in this day and age of the internet and his characters fame growing, it was impossible to do the same type of movie as Borat with all skits leaking on the internet before they happened.  Still it was a good attempt, may be the last of its kind.

Predator Island move This is from Nick: http://nicksmovieblog-macattack.blogspot.com/

Brüno is a bad movie! We have to stop this, people shouldn’t watch this! But…how do you get mad at a movie that’s sole purpose is to receive just that response? Whaaaat? That’s an interesting question raised about Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest flick about a gay Austrian who comes to America. This is following Borat Rocky Balboa full movie , now that was controversial. It angered gay rights activists, the battle of the sexes, even the entire country of Kazakhstan! A spokesman for Kazakhstan said this of his character: “I think he should be killed. Our nation is most humane, but he should be killed straight away.” And because of that whirlwind of controversy, Borat sky-rocketed to being not just a cult hit, but a worldwide sensation. “The joke is not on Kazakhstan,” said Cohen in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I think the joke is on people who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist-a country where homosexuals wear blue hats and the women live in cages and they drink fermented horse urine.” $261.6 million worldwide box office dollars later, what could possible follow all of this up?

Flight of the Phoenix film Enter Brüno, the second character off of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show (there’s also Ali G himself along with Borat and Brüno in the series). In Brüno, Cohen gets fired from his fashion show in Austria, so he figures that he could make it big in America. From there, it just goes from bad to worse; from Brüno pouring glasses of champagne out of his boyfriend’s ass to being whipped at a swinger’s party by a woman with big breasts who produces “a lot of milk”. I loved the movie when I saw it; it had to be one of the best comedies I’ve seen so far this year. Land of the Lost and Fired Up! got nothing on this fearless gay guy! This time around, people want to get mad, but why, to only feed the movie’s aspiration like with Borat? Universal Pictures, which distributed Brüno, screened the movie for gay and lesbian groups to get their reactions, and in the end GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) asked the studio to include a bulletin of reinforcement for gays everywhere at the end of the mockumentary. The request, of course, was denied.

There was also the infamous MTV Movie Awards incident (which I missed because I had to go to the bathroom, URGH!) earlier this year in which Sacha Baron Cohen came spiraling down from the studio ceiling into the audience wearing wings and a G-string and landed in the position with his rear end smack dab in front of rapper Eminem’s face. Eminem then got angry and he and his “posse” left the ceremony. The next day, there wasn’t a channel that you could switch to that wasn’t talking about it! And one thing was on everyone’s mind: was it staged? The writers of the two-hour spectacle released that not only was it planned, it was rehearsed as well. And that got me wondering whether or not his then upcoming movie was legit in fooling innocent civilians and celebrities. And a later revealed lawsuit gave me a vindication. Richelle Olson sued Baron Cohen and NBC Universal on May 22nd, saying that “Brüno’s” antics resulted in her disability. She says that a scene with the gay Austrian at a charity bingo game in Palmdale, California left her needing a wheelchair or cane to strut around. She sued for $25,000. The alleged part wasn’t included in the movie.

A Date with Judy ipod The Negotiator rip

In conclusion, Brüno was and will always remain a powerhouse of controversy. But should we get mad or just roll with the punches? I think that everyone is overreacting. The point of a comedy is to make you laugh, and that’s exactly what Brüno did. The added debates just made it that much more hilarious.

download Displaced , the over zealous gay character created from the comedic genius mind of fellow tribe member Sacha Baron Cohen was released this weekend in America.  Bruno was developed in much of the way Cohen’s previous movie Borat was shot.  A series of skits aimed to capture the ignorance of people and amuse movie goers.  This movie was more produced and it was hard to determine which skits were real and which were set ups.  Still the majority of the gags hit such as when Bruno interviewed a terrorist.  Even though the crude humor and skits pushed the limits, the movie studio still decided to leave out the funny Michael Jackson scene

Yes, Bruno ruined a fashion show in Europe, is blacklisted from the industry, and is forced to come to the US to wreak havoc. In this brief 82 minute fiasco, Bruno” runs rampant and causes laugh out loud reactions.  Well, at least that’s what critics are saying. Overall, the film is receiving positive feedback.  I have read a bunch of reviews, and wanted to share a couple with you.

Roger Ebert,

and Michael Jackson, the pop legend who recently passed away of cardiac arrest, have more in common than you may think.  No there is not some twisted little joke coming although I’m sure you could think of plenty.  But in the Bruno film that was premiered the same day as Jackson’s death, a scene was cut as it was related to Michael Jackson Finding Nemo film .  The scene actually was about Bruno approaching Michael’s sister, Latoya Jackson, and talking to her as if she was Michael.  It appears there are a few jokes in the movie that poke fun at Jackson’s expense.  While I’m sure the jokes are hysterical (and probably deserved) it seems that the studio did some last minute edit to cut parts of these jokes from the movie to try to be in good taste on the day of his death.

Monster-in-Law

The director of Brüno, Larry Charles, stated last night, “We decided to take it out for tonight and we’ll reassess before the release whether to keep it out.” Modesty Blaise movie

I understand why last minute they took the scene out and have no complaints with it.  I bet the scenes are funny, and in my opinion deserved, even though I do love his music.  Whether it’s in good taste to leave them in for the national release well we will see what they decide.  And I hope they decide to leave them in.

Not only because the scenes are probably hysterical…but let’s get real.  This entire movie and premise pokes fun at how dumb America can be and the ignorant and naïve that exists to play on certain stereotypes.  There are a lot of crude and sexual related jokes going to be in the movie.  I don’t think leaving in jokes to this degree would be tasteless, not for this type of movie.  That’s the point of it and people going to see this movie get it.  Sure you will have Madonna cry about it and complain, but who really cares.

I understand that Michael Jackson is a pop legend and has affected so many people’s lives by his music and presence, but I don’t think a movie should have to leave out scenes that will make it a success just because of it.  It’s going to be interesting to see what the studio and director decide by the July 10 release.

Do you think the movie should leave the scene in or take it out?

We Want More Dildos, Keep “Bruno” NC-17

Posted by Craig Kessler on April 4, 2009 at 2:30 am

The new Sacha Baron Cohen “Bruno” film has been recently given a rating of NC-17.  While everyone knows that this means nothing because clearly they are going to have to water it down to get it to an R- rating, but I may be on the minority side, but wish they didn’t.

Sacha Baron Cohen has not only helped keep the Jewish comedian alive and strong, he has taken developing unique and fresh characters to a completely different level.  I honestly wasn’t even a huge fan of his Ali G show, never was a weekly watcher, but did appreciate the Borat and Bruno skits that he would unfold.

The way he brings about the ignorance and insecurities in his skits is incredible how he really shows America the painful truth that sometimes exists in the people who live here.  Other times, it’s just simple comedic genius revolving around the normal bystander who has no idea what they are getting themselves in.

It’s crazy how after the success of Borat and his identity and skits being shown to the masses that he was even able to create this movie.  I know there were issues with timing and authenticity at times because certain locations of where he would do his skits would be released on the web, and clearly his character has grown since Borat came out.  But I guess it shows you that it doesn’t matter, plenty of people still do not know and could care less.

Which is why I would love for the movie to stay NC-17.  Even though I still get carded sometimes by a pimple faced skinny freak of a geek at the movies who is clearly at least 5 years younger than me, the fact that I am of age to see a movie like this, makes me want to see it full blown this way.  I can already see some of the antics being played out in full like the dildo scene from the trailer.  In a way, cutting out certain parts will hurt the movie, not help it in terms of the quality and comedy of the movie.  Two things clearly the studios don’t really care about, because it would make no money if left alone.

I really hope they have the unrated NC-17 version on the DVD when it does come out.  Most unrated versions of movies basically mean nothing.  Usually it’s the exact same movie with an extra 2 seconds of boob time.  Great sure, but I want more.  Hopefully when this unrated version comes out we get more than just deleted scenes and bloopers, but the full raunchy hysterical skits that we all really want to see, no sugar coating at all.
