What impact would that might have?

In the New York Times article, “Facebook is Developing Ways to Share Media” published Friday, Ben Sisaro and Miguel Helft state that talks of a Facebook and Netflix collaboration are in the works. This just became the biggest news to hit social networking since Facebook attempted a similar partnership with Apple (which eventually was shut down, but hey, who’s counting?). As the article confirms, during a presentation in the eG8 technology conference that took place in France this past week, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook (come on guys, if you didn’t know that, I can’t help you) stated that the Facebook team is currently trying to integrate video content on their site. Netflix, among other companies, is currently in discussion of a partnership that would allow Facebook to do just that.

If all goes according to plan, Facebook would allow users to upload and share an array of TV shows, news, music and other types of media. As Zuckerberg stated during his presentation, “Listening to music is something that people do with their friends…Music, TV, news, books — those types of things I think people just naturally do with their friends. I hope we can play a part in enabling those new companies to get built, and companies that are out there producing this great content to become more social.” And, if executed flawlessly, Netflix would be just one of the potential companies whose partnership with Facebook would allow for both parties to “become more social.”

So there you have it, a possible Facebook/Netflix collaboration, amongst others. This seems to have the potential to be a great move on Zuckerberg’s part, and yet the only thing that keeps coming to mind is Justin Timberlake’s well-stated line (and possibly his only one throughout all of The Social Network): “A million dollars isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion dollars.”

So what do you think Banterers? A interesting and creative idea from Facebook mastermind Zuckerberg? Or just another step in his attempt at world domination?

Gnomeo & Juliet will be out in theaters February 11th. The animated feature is about two gnomes who fall in love but are caught in a feud between their respective groups, the red gnomes and the blue gnomes. The film stars James McAvoy as Gnomeo and Emily Blunt as Juliet. Also exciting is the soundtrack, which will feature music by Elton John and Lady Gaga, among other musicians. I’m looking forward to the adaptation of the Shakespeare classic. Hope it’s not as tragic-it looks absolutely hilarious!

Michael Dowse’s Take Me Home Tonight, starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, and Teresa Palmer, comes out in theaters on March 4th. I’m excited to see how such a fun cast and story comes together later this year. Read on for a synopsis of the film, the trailer, poster, stills, and more:

As the summer of 1988 winds down, three friends on the verge of adulthood attend an out-of-control party in celebration of their last night of unbridled youth. Starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer, Take Me Home Tonight is a raunchy, romantic and ultimately touching blast from the past set to an awesome soundtrack of timeless rock and hip-hop hits.

Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

But Matt’s silent protest against maturity comes to a screeching halt once his unrequited high school crush, Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer), walks into the store. When she invites him to an epic, end-of-summer party, Matt thinks he finally might have a chance with the girl of his dreams. With his cynical twin sister Wendy (Anna Faris) and best friend Barry (Dan Fogler), Matt embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime evening. From stealing a car to a marriage proposal to an indescribable, no-holds-barred dance-off, these friends share experiences that will change the course of their lives on one unforgettable night in the Go-Go ’80s.

As you fellow Movie-Banterers know, both The Social Network and Let Me In are premiering this weekend. I know we’re all thinking it so I’ll just say it-Does Let Me In stand a chance??? Let’s think about this…

I think it’s safe to say that they’re both culturally American films—Let Me In is basically the American version of the Swedish horror film Let the Right One In, and Facebook, well…duh. It’s also a good time for both films to “attack.” Facebook has evolved more than ever—there isn’t a single person who doesn’t know what it is. And the fact that Facebook has every possible audience member at its fingertips means the film will probably have the best publicity in the history of filmmaking. On the other hand, the vampires are making their comeback, what with Twilight, True Blood, etc. Even the actors make it a tough call—The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake will be pulling in fans from all directions. Then again, we have Chloe Moretz, our fellow Kick-Ass superstar, and Richard Jenkins vying for Let Me In.

One thing I’m in favor of is Let Me In’s kick-ass female protagonist (pun intended). Unfortunately, it seems customary for movies with strong female protagonists to fail unless Angelina Jolie is the star, or there is good promise of sexual display, not unlike with the Charlie’s Angels films. I kind of doubt Let Me In can do this with a creepy underage girl as the main character… Because of the protagonists’ young age I would have expected the target audience to be of the same age (what is up with creepy children and the horror genre?), but the horror genre and R rating obviously indicate otherwise. To put it one way, the two films won’t really be stealing too much of each other’s target viewers. On the other hand, the story the film is based on is very highly esteemed and the Swedish film adaptation made back in 2008 got amazing reviews, being voted onto more than twenty five critics’ top ten lists of the best films that year. Therefore, we can hopefully expect no less from this one.

During a 2010 Tribeca Film Festival talk on the future of film distribution, a very experienced panel agreed that social networking ultimately doesn’t matter if the film isn’t good enough, one of their examples being Four Eyed Monsters (if you’ve never seen the film, then the point is made). However, The Social Network director David Fincher, being an Academy Award nominee and all, has a pretty good reputation, and all of the above in his film’s favor. If what the Tribeca panel said is true, Let Me In stands a chance overall, but not particularly for this weekend.

Which will you choose?

It is here! It is finally here! The Social Network hits theaters Friday. Directed by David Fincher (Fight Club) and written by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), The Social Network is our most anticipated movie of the Fall. Jesse Eisenberg plays the famous Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield (the next Spiderman) plays Zuckerberg’s original business partner Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake plays the crazy Napster founder, Sean Parker, who was Zuckerberg’s adviser for some time. Did you know Zuckerberg got a perfect 16 hundo (1600) on his SAT’s. Well, according to the movie he did. Not bad.

In the film’s TV spots we have seen countless critics go crazy on how good the film is. Peter Travers called it the movie of the year and a movie that defines a decade. And the trailer with Kanye’s “Power” as the theme song, pretty much does the best job ever at getting you excited to see the film. If the movie were a WWE wrestler, “Power,” would be its entrance music.

Well, let it be known that this film is great. Eisenberg nails the part and I think finally breaks passed that Michael Cera like persona. Timberlake was also great as Parker and really shows how talented a guy he is. But the guy who stole the show is Garfield. Andrew Garfield was flat out awesome. I don’t even know anything about his character Eduardo Saverin, but I felt like I did after watching the film. Garfield was so good that I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets an Oscar nod. He really deserves it. However, there was one element to the movie even better than Garfield. That of Aaron Sorkin.

Aaron Sorkin’s writing is the ultimate feature to this film. The writing of the film reminded me of The West Wing. His ability to convey so much emotion in his writing is second to none. I don’t even need to see the rest of the films this year, and I already think Sorkin will win Best Adapted Screenplay. After you see the movie, you will know what I mean. The writing was nothing short of spectacular.

While the film as a whole was great, I don’t think it will win Best Picture. I definitely think it will get nominated especially since the nominations expanded to 10. I’d say I liked Inception more than this film.

Dear Banterers,

We at themoviebanter.com would like to announce that all future trailer and picture content will be posted exclusively to our Facebook page. The unique dynamic we have with our Facebook page is that it’s basically a forum for us to chat about movies. And what do we all love to banter about, the new hot movie, right! Well the new hot movie is usually discussed after a trailer or picture is released. To be consistent with that theme, we will provide all our trailer content (both videos and links) to our Facebook page. If you are not a fan already, you should sign up to be a fan.

We will keep a trailer box on our sidebar for the mean time in order to feed in our favorite trailers for our most anticipated upcoming movies. Or until we figure something better to do with it. If you want to download new trailer content on your personal laptop or get links to new trailer content, then go to our Facebook page. We are open to ideas as well.

Thanks

So they’re making a movie about Facebook; it was only a matter of time. At least it’s not Cats and Dogs 2. (Oh they’re making that too? Hm.) But the movie sounds like it’s about friendship, betrayal, success, money. All great things to make a movie about. I say “sounds” because both movie trailers to date have not offered a single video clip from the film. But still, I’m actually thinking this movie could be pretty good.

The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg as well as Rashida Jones and newly announced Spiderman Andrew Garfield. (This kid could really go places.) I think Eisenberg is good for the leading role and it fits his personality, which can always be a good thing or a bad thing. So why today of all days do I bring up a movie like this?

It has been announced that The Social Network will not be allowed to use Facebook to market its film. Whaaaaaaaat? Now there are the people that would say Zuckerberg being portrayed in a negative light is the reason for this, but come on. Any publicity is good publicity right? I would have to imagine this guy has more money than he’ll ever need and hurting his ego isn’t exactly something the studio needs to worry about.

I don’t know the specs, but if I were Colombia, I would push a little harder to get those advertisements in there. Realistically, no one over thirty-five is super excited for this movie. The kids are the ones on Facebook, and the adults who would see this movie are too. In some ways the website is just a big free ad itself, but think of all the cool possibilities of advertising a movie about Facebook on the site itself. Status updates, photos, pages for the cast, etc. It would be a new step in viral marketing that only a movie like this could really do well. It would blend perfectly and the characters could become their own personalities before the movie opens.

If it’s Zuckerberg preventing this, I think he should lighten up and think about the next step. He is a pioneer, so why not let bygones be bygones and try something new. After all isn’t that what got him success in the first place?

Recently I wrote about how Paranormal Activity released their teaser trailer for the sequel and have begun another campaign to push word of mouth of the new movie. Well that is continuing more so, and it looks like they are taking things to the next level to get people talking about it all over the internet on Facebook, Twitter, and of course blogs like I am doing here.

Cinemark is reportedly pulling the Paranormal Activity 2 trailer from several of its theaters in response to multiple complaints from moviegoers in Texas.

Our friends at Screenrant released the story saying that the World Health Organization (WHO) ordered theaters to release a warning for the trailer that it could be harmful and dangerous. This is extremely all ridiculous, but apparently some teens who were watching Eclipse saw the teaser trailer and freaked out, stirring all this up. How much of a degree did little Jacob fans go crazy? Who knows, but from a business standpoint Cinemark has to do what they have to do to cover their butt.

I wonder if the studio behind the sequel is behind this at all and influencing this. Or is this just the perfect coincidence that the movie needs to begin the viral buzz? The fact that the trailer is SO SCARY that it needs to be pulled, makes it that much more intriguing, and something I can see the studio playing off on future commercials and tag lines.

“The movie that had its trailer pulled cause it was too scary.”

This could not be more perfect for the makers behind Paranormal Activity 2, and not more perfect for anyone who likes to see Twilight fans freak out. That’s not right, but true.

Do you think the studio was behind this at all? Do you think that this will push the online buzz of Paranormal Activity 2?

I am one who happens to enjoy reading books despite being so active. I enjoy the shopping experience of going to the book store, checking out what around, making my selection, and coming home and laying on the couch for 30 minutes to read. Especially during the summer, I enjoy a good fun summer read. That is exactly what Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is. From Seth Grahame-Smith, the guy who brought us Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, comes a mock biography about one of the most famous Americans ever, and his unknown secret to the world. The bestselling book has already skyrocketed up the charts and has seen a lot of buzz on the internet. Do to its quick uprising, it may be cashing in at the box office soon.

With Tim Burton already slated to be working on the project, this movie has everything that a studio wants for a hit. First all, kudos, for Grahame-Smith for having the foresight to write this style of book. He took the vampire craze and combined it with an American icon, pure genius.

Now Hollywood is going to reap in the benefits from this unique story as well. Wherever you turn, vampires will be found. The vampire craze is in full force and it seems there is no slowing down. You have pictures like Twilight to get your teeny bopper fix, an intense adult drama in True Blood, and others in between.

This movie will be the next in line and Hollywood will do everything it can to exploit this. I can already see a potential Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter game on Facebook that will be surfacing, where Facebook users will install the app to their profiles where they will becoming Abe and hunt vampires. Maybe their Facebook friends can then see their progress and scores and even interact with others as the game is going on. The potentials are huge, and that is only the beginning. This movie has everything to it that a creative marketer can use to boost appeal.

I feel this movie will also reach beyond generation Y, and many adults will be intrigued for the history aspect, even though it is a mock. I love the book and recommend it to everyone looking for a fun summer read, and stay tuned for more updates on the potential movie, cause I feel big things happening with this movie real soon.

Do you think Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is the next in line for the vampire craze treatment?

Hollywood studios are always looking for the next place to reach out to in order to gain awareness for their movies. Movies not only rely on reviews, but word of mouth buzz to gain traction which could lead to ticket sales for their movies. With social media, the doors are more open than ever for studios to become creative with online strategy to attract fans and help spread the word about their movies. The potential reach is limitless, and now studios are beginning online campaigns months prior to the release of a movie.

Alice in Wonderland the upcoming 3D blockbuster starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and directed by the amazing and quirky Tim Burton comes out next Friday on March 5th. Disney has spent months pushing this movie online and engaging fans with their Alice and Wonderland Facebook Fan Page and more. Recently they just had their movie premiere in London on February 25th and live streamed the event to the world.

A few movies like Avatar have used live streaming techniques with their promotions, and this method which currently can be seen as a trend, will slowly become the standard. Live streaming a premiere is a great way for a movie studio to give a fan a personal front and center red carpet experience right from their home computer. It allows fans the opportunity to be part of the major event and see their favorite actors and actresses live, really making them fully part of the event. While watching the premiere through the Alice and Wonderland Facebook Page, fans also had the opportunity to connect in real time with other fans about the live events going on, making this a special and interactive event.

This strategy is a great way for studios to allow fans access which will only help spread the viral buzz for the movie, and likely lead to increased sales. Expect to see this become the norm for all big movie releases in the future.
