The Hangover is the Reason the Golden Globes are Better than the Oscars

The award show season is among us as the recent 2010 Golden Globes has come and gone.  There is so much attention given to these award shows, even when it is a down year in Hollywood like this past year has been.  A lot of it can be attributed to the 2007 writers strike for a piss poor summer blockbuster season, but that’s a separate issue.

Award shows are supposed to bring together the best of the best.  The Oscar nominations will be released February 2nd, but does anyone care?  Probably not and that’s because the Oscars are so outdated, and the Golden Globes are better.

In an attempt to lure more banter about the Oscars award shows, the Academy widened the Best Picture nominees to 10, which just means more crappy movies that have no shot of winning will be nominated.  This pointless strategy will do nothing for ratings or get viewers interested, and I think I know why.

Because The Hangover won a Golden Globe.

The Golden Globes is a more fun awards show to watch than the Oscars since it has more fun categories.  Aside from the TV aspect, it has expanded categories for movies that give less traditional movies a chance to win an award.  Separating different categories like Best Drama and Best Comedy/Musical is a small and simple step that allows different movies like The Hangover, or 500 Days of Summer to be nominated while they wouldn’t be in the Oscars.  I know I quoted lines from the Hangover a ton, and so have many people.  It’s a fans movie, not a critical movie and yet it still won an award.

The MTV movie awards show even takes it further and has very casual categories like Best Kiss, which play to a younger audience.  The introduction of this awards show really hurt both the Oscars and Golden Globes.

I understand that many traditionalists wouldn’t want to open up the Oscars to an MTV style show because it is not a formal event, but the Oscars should take notes to try to be more fun and open up their categories to allow for more fan loved movies to have a chance to be nominated.  The event will then be more fun for viewers, and ratings will increase.

What do you think?

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2010 Golden Globes

For most viewers of any awards show, the red carpet is really the only thing a lot of people care about.  It’s a way for people to see their favorite stars strut their stuff along the red carpet being interviewed about what they are wearing, and the bling they are representing for the night.  Even with the rain coming down, the event was still a pleasure to watch, and like every year, there are some stunning woman and those who well…..EPIC FAIL.

Here is a list of the top best dressed and worst dressed woman of the event.

Best Dressed

1. Jennifer Aniston

Is she not America’s sweetheart or what?  This former friend is still a leading lady in the movies and looks so elegant in her long black dress.  She is the definition of class and still makes heads turns.  She certainly will be on anyone’s best dressed list.

2. Emily Blunt

3. Sofia Vergara (Hot Cuban who plays wife to Al Bundy in Modern Family)

4. Julie Bowen (AKA Virginia from Happy Gilmore, also in Modern Family)

5. Cameron Diaz

Worst Dressed

1. Mariah Carey

I don’t know what happened to the girl who sang “Fantasy” (yes I bought the CD back in 1995) and was the hot stuff of the 90’s and early 2000’s.  Even with boy toy on her arm she just does not look good and clearly let herself go.  It looks like someone took a hand held pump to her chest right before the night to make sure it was game time.  Whatever went on behind the scenes, she just does not look good.

2. Drew Barrymore

3. Tina Fey

4. Fergie

5. Jennifer Morrison

Golden Globes Reaction

Last night was quite a night to the kick off the official award season. There were some suprises, some snubs, a great Mel Gibson knock by Ricky Gervais, and a speech from Martin Scorcese that will be remembered for some time. Lets get to it.

Best Picture (Drama)/Director – Who would of thought? Avatar retains the heavyweight title not just at the box office but also in award land.  What can’t this movie do. The only thing I can say is, let someone else grab the glory. The Hurt Locker is the movie of the year and more deserving to take the top dog prize than James Cameron’s [Insert movie title here].   Team “Locker” was snubbed here. Kathryn Bigelow and Jeremy Renner (Hurt’s director and main star) had defeat in their eyes. It was obvious. Even Cameron admitted he thought Bigelow was going to win for Director. Come on Hollywood Foreign Press. Get with the program.

Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) – The Hangover? Wait, please repeat that, The Hangover! Todd Phillips was completely stunned his monster comedy hit would result with him accepting a Golden Globe.  His initial remark “we did not expect this, Harvey Weinstein is going to kick my ass, but I have Mike Tyson behind me so I’ll be ok.” Haha. Zach Galifiankis, where were you last night man? This whole thing was great. This is what makes the Globes almost, or even better than the Oscar show.

Best Actor (Drama) – Jeff Bridges – one of the most talented actors in our generation. I did not see Crazy Heart but I can imagine how good he must have been. He is an all-timer. Even the audience gave him the standing-O.  He was wasted in his acceptance speech but it was awesome.

Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) – RDJ – this was a joke. When a movie sucks, it should lose any chance of taking home awards, even it its for acting. RDJ is a great actor but I cannot believe he won an award for this role. Great acceptance speech though. He admitted his wife told him Damon would win for The Informant, and thus shouldn’t prepare anything. That is great.

Best Actress (Drama) – Sandra Bullock winning was the best award win all night. The Blindside was the ultimate surprise movie.  Per the trailer, you might think it would be cheesy. Nuh uh. The Blindside was awesome. It was equivalent to the guy who comes off the bench to drop 50.  Bullock is going to get Oscar gold. Miss Congeniality with an Oscar? Now that’s a suprise.

Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) – Meryl Streep – Boring, she wins everything. Yes, she is a talent, but watching her win 1083737 awards is getting annoying.

Best Supporting Actor – Chris Waltz – this is a LOCK. We talked about it when Inglorious first hit theaters that Waltz would be in the discussion. Now, this guy winning Oscar gold is more of a lock than Brett Favre coming back from retirement. His voice is so eerie though.

Best Supporting Actress - Mo’Nique  – you’ve come a long way since Beerfect. Congrats

We did get that right. There are 2 categories for best actor/actress and 1 for supporting. It is not a typo.

Other Comments -

Gervais knocking Gibson was awesome. “I like a drink as much as the next guy, unless that guy is Mel Gibson”…enter Mel Gibson. haha

Martin Scorcese’s speech in taking home the Cecil B Demille award (aka Lifetime Achievement) was amazing.  He is incredibly well spoken.  Speeches like that remind me of why I love movies so much.

Oscar noms get released on Feb 2. It wil be interesting.
