After watching the one and only Morgan Freeman accept the Cecil B. DeMille award at this year’s Golden Globes, it got me to thinking about his body of work. Clip after clip during the obligatory introductory montage showed Mr. Freeman in a variety of roles, but one thing most of them had in common was that despite the vast differences between each role, they tended to be inspiring ones. He’s played the Principal Joe Clark to an underprivileged inner-city school in Lean on Me, he’s played the President to the United States forced to deal with an impending apocalypse in Deep Impact, he’s played God (yes, that God) in Bruce Almighty, he’s even played Nelson Mandela (Nelson Mandela!) in Invictus. Is there any inspiring role that Mr. Freeman will not take on and subsequently perfect?! I mean, let’s be real: he even so quintessentially embodied the Jesus figure in Unforgiven.

Among Freeman’s top inspiring roles, one seems to stand out so fully above all the rest. Not that the other roles are somehow flawed or bad (except for maybe his ill-fated role in Dolphin Tale), but instead that this famed one is so good that it has managed to transcend all the rest. As I’m sure you have guessed by now, the role I speak of is that of Red in Frank Darabont’s 7-Oscar nominated film, The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Yes, while Red is a self-admitted (and not to mention, convicted) murderer sentenced to a 40-year stint in prison, Freeman somehow managed to make what otherwise could have been an unlikable, incredibly disturbing character into one that is more worldly than his 40-years behind bars could possibly allow.

On top of this worldliness, Red comes equipped with irreplaceable advice and a compelling character to boot. I’d even venture to say it is Red, not his actually innocent counterpart, Andy Dufresne that really makes the movie. This is not least because despite Red’s questionable moral character, he manages to prove to the viewer as well as to himself that he is the most awe-inspiring individual in this film world.

This becomes especially clear in the scene in which Red comes across the parole board for the second time in the film. Instead of denying his involvement in the crime, he decides to tell the truth and, on top of that, manages to put the parole board members in their place. This scene is inspiring, for sure, but also achieves the perfect chill and heartfelt-tear-inducing ratio.

Watch the clip below. And afterwards, feel free to ask yourself if there is any role Morgan Freeman can take on and not make somewhat inspiring and chill-producing, Dolphin Tale aside of course.

Waking up the morning after the Golden Globes is a little like waking up the morning after Christmas. All the excitement leading up to this momentous event– all the red carpet anticipation, the hours spent trying to guess the winners, the money bartered once you’re convinced of said winners– has, at once, come to an end. But, alas, the Golden Globes has one saving grace that ol’ Christmas does not: the Golden Globes are a precursor to the Academy Awards, a dry-run for the real reason award season happens. And with that, all the excitement that has come and gone with the passing of the Golden Globes has become instantly worth it. It’s the Golden Globes, after all, which serve as the only real form of prediction for the Oscars. A review, then, of the Golden Globes become necessary, if only to increase the excitement and anticipation of the impending Oscars.

After looking again at a list of winners, there are a few things that immediately stand out. Yes, many awards went to the obvious choices– no one was really that surprised that Jean Dujarin took home the best actor award in a comedy or musical for his silent performance in The Artist, or that Meryl Streep was the top pick for best actress in a drama for her role in The Iron Lady, or even that The Artist was chosen as the best comedy or musical film (God, was Harvey Weinstein having his heyday).

But then, like any good award show, there were the shocks that let us all eagerly anticipating the Oscars know that we have a real race ahead of us. For example, is George Clooney really the top pick for the Best Actor category for his lead performance in The Descendants over his friend, Brad Pitt’s role (and higher-praised at that) in Moneyball? Or what about the best director award? It came as a shock to me (and I’m sure to many) that given as many awards The Artist was slated to take home, its director, Michel Hazanavicius, lost it to Martin Scorsese for his animated Hugo. Will The Artist actually win all the Oscars its slated to? (I not-so-secretly hope not).

Shocks aside, you also have to wonder if the obvious choice-wins were the Awards Season’s way of throwing us off our game for the Oscars. For example, will Meryl Streep actually take home the Best Actress Oscar, or, in a (probably deserving upset) will the award go to Rooney Mara for her amazing performance in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or even Viola Davis in The Help? And with Octavia Spencer winning the Best Supporting Actress Globe, does that mean that Jessica Chastain has a better chance of winning any Oscar she may be nominated for (after all, she was in a staggering number of well-received films this year)?

I guess there is no way to tell until first, the Oscar nominations are released, and second, until the actual Oscars happen. But let me tell you, if Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life is snubbed the way it was at the more viewer-friendly Golden Globes, the award show is going to have some ‘splaining to do.

Overall, I thought the Golden Globes were great this year (due in large part to its three-year-running great host Ricky Gervais). Hopefully, the Oscars will learn a thing or two from this event. Until this can be discerned, I thank the Golden Globes (and the Hollywood Foreign Press) for a good night full of some expected awards and some shocks.

The Award season has officially kicked off today with the Hollywood Foreign Press’ Golden Globe Awards. One of my favorite award shows of the year for combining television and film into one night, the show was filled with hilarious commentary by Ricky Gervais (who was a bit more tame this year no?) and some surprising wins! Most of it was pretty predictable in my eyes although Meryl Streep taking home the Best Dramatic Actress statue was a bit of a surprise for me (Rooney Mara was robbed!). I wish 50/50 would’ve received more love as it was my favorite film of 2011, but being nominated is good enough I suppose! It seems like ‘The Artist’ was a favorite this year and we can assume it will follow suit at The Academy Awards in February.

It’s January again and that means two things for movies, the studios release their worst films in what is known as “dump month,” and the Golden Globe (“GG”) Awards take place! So in honor of next Sunday’s 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards show, I have decided to showcase my favorite quote from the past ceremonies.

Believe it or not, my favorite quote in the history of the GG Awards took place just last year courtesy of the always-lovable Robert Downey Jr. when he presented the award for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical. It was a pretty lengthy speech for someone that was just presenting an award but it was definitely worth it.

Right after taking a little dig at host Ricky Gervais he takes a moment to discuss a recent study he has done in Hollywood. “I don’t know if an actress can do her best work until I have slept with her.” He then proceeds to list all of the nominated actresses (including youngster Emma Stone) and recalls stories of when they turned him down for sex. The whole speech is pretty brilliant so you should watch the whole thing including Ricky Gervais’ introduction:

Can’t wait to see what amazing quotes we get this year! Tune in to the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards this Sunday, January 15th to find out!

One of my favorite award shows of the year, the Golden Globes, have just announced their official nominations this morning and I am pretty happy with the results. While yesterday’s SAG award nominations were a bit of a let down for me, the Golden Globes seemed to get most things right in my book!

The nominees are officially in for the 20th annual 2011 MTV Movie Awards and I guess you could say I’m not exactly surprised by the outcome, just a bit disappointed. I get that it’s MTV and not necessarily the Academy Awards here but can someone please explain to me why ‘The Twilight Sage: Eclipse’ has garnered a whopping 8 nominations?! I’m not completely bashing the Twilight series, they’re not for me, but I also don’t think they are the worst movies ever. But should it be nominated for Best Movie of the year? Hell no! It’s almost laughable that Twilight sits beside films like ‘Black Swan,’ ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,’ ‘Inception,’ and ‘The Social Network.’ What’s even worse, because the MTV Movie Awards are based on online voting, Twilight has a HUGE chance of actually winning this category, along with all the other categories it’s nominated for!

Additionally, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner have all attained acting nods in what most critics have labeled as wooden performances. Also, can someone tell me why Jennifer Aniston has been nominated for Best Female Performance in ‘Just Go With It’ for essentially playing herself once again?

Like I said before, I get that it’s the MTV Movie Awards but at the same time, how can you put Natalie Portman for ‘Black Swan’ in the same category as Jennifer Aniston and Kristen Stewart without this entire award show being considered a huge joke? I’m not bashing Aniston or Stewart because I know they are both very capable of stellar performances (‘The Good Girl’ and ‘The Runaways’ respectively) but to nominate them for the sole fact that they are stars really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It reminds me of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp being nominated for ‘The Tourist’ at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year and hopefully this pattern does not continue.

Maybe I’m just being too sensitive. I guess I wouldn’t mind so much if I thought other films would have a chance, but unfortunately, the most prominent voters with this type of award show will most likely hand it to Twilight, and in my opinion that’s a big mistake.

To look at the full list of nominees and to vote for them, head over here:

The first major award show of the season gave us some great moments. From quotes, to footage, to simple hand gestures, there were plenty of moments to take away from this Sunday’s great show.

1. Ricky Gervais – I hope they bring him back next year because this guy just doesn’t give a crap. He will say whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Feed him some booze and the words just come out. His best line – “There were a lot of big films that didn’t get nominated this year – nothing for Sex and the City 2. I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster.”

On a side note, apparently an anonymous member of the Hollywood Foreign Press has said Gervais won’t be invited back. Well, that’s a shame.

2. Natalie Portman – yes, she won her big award but also deviated from her good girl image. Natalie told the whole world that her fiance loves to “sleep with her.” Come on, who didn’t crack up when she said that.

3. J Lo giving Ricky Gervais the finger – in a night full of crude responses from Gervais’s ridiculous lines, J Lo actually responded the best. After Gervais gave her a great line of ‘being Jenny from the block if that block was between Cardier and Prada (or something like that)’, J Lo simply flashed the finger. Tim Allen was straight pissed at Gervais but J Lo handled herself great.

4. Carson Daly butchering his interview with Mark Wahlberg – During the pre-show, Daly began his chit chat with Marky Mark by talking about The Fighter then segwayed into Christian Bale’s amazing performance as “Dickie Ward.” Wait…oops. Carson, did you mean to say “Dickie Ecklund.” I guess when you said you loved The Fighter, you were talking from actually seeing it. Oh wait, maybe not.

5. Robert Downey Jr. – coming onto everyone in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) category in front of his wife. His speech was nothing short of hilarious. Oh, and Emma Stone was loving it.

What moments did you like?

Last night was this year’s Golden Globes, and although everyone should consider themselves winners, and all presenters were victims yet again to Ricky Gervais’ even “ouch-er” introductions (is anyone else surprised he got to come back?), we still wanted to know who got to go home with those shiny awards…

Best Picture (Drama) – The Social Network. Clearly, the film was the favorite of the night (hints at the Oscars, anyone?). I think it was an extremely difficult decision, all nominees were worthy. Everyone involved with the film should be very proud because they won a really tough fight, and no one can say they did not deserve it.

Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) – The Kids Are All Right. Well…I will honestly say I was not a loving supporter of any of the nominees in this category, as their being a part of it was just as confusing to me as Gervais’ being welcomed back as a host. I haven’t seen the film, but considering all the nominees, it was a pretty fair win. It’s times like these when I wish animated films could cross over to the other categories and stand a chance of winning something.

Best Actor (Drama) – Colin Firth (The King’s Speech). I think it’s safe to say this one was expected (even though this was a tough category too). Could he be on his way to getting an Oscar next month? I don’t mean to sound crude, but I’m glad he finally got something. I’m sure the other guys have many potentially award-filled years ahead of them. Not that I think Firth is really old or going to die really soon or something—I really don’t, I’m just happy he’s been recognized.

Best Actress (Drama) – Natalie Portman (Black Swan). We all definitely expected this one. Portman was the favorite and is absolutely amazing. And I loved her acceptance speech, haha. Oscars…

Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) – Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version). I missed Barney’s Version, but since there’s no missing Giamatti’s talent, I trust everyone’s content with this one. As for the fact that Giamatti beat Johnny Depp…twice (technically speaking, as Depp was nominated for his role in two films), I’m sure all Depp fans (including myself-how could I not be?) will agree they were jumping for joy just to see him attend the event this year.

Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) – Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right). Again, I didn’t see the film but I really appreciate Bening’s work and agree shez got mad skillllz.

Best Supporting Actor – Christian Bale (The Fighter). I will openly say I’m really sad Geoffrey Rush did not win, but good for Bale! And congrats to Douglas not only on his nomination, but on his recent recovery.

Best Supporting Actress – Melissa Leo (The Fighter). Again, a fair fight, no pun intended. No sad faces here. Sorry Amy Adams!

Best Director – David Fincher (The Social Network). Just like the Best Picture category, everyone was still especially deserving. Every director had amazing stuff to work with-talent, screenplays, overall concepts. Congrats to Fincher.

Best Screenplay – The Social Network (Aaron Sorkin). If there’s any award The Social Network deserved without a fight, it was this one. Sure, I feel bad for Nolan, who always has AMAZING concepts and twists, but he just gets too twisty. Some of the most brilliant things are regarded as such because of their simplicity. The Social Network revolved around a simple trial but was brilliant because of the story structure, the way underlying messages were introduced throughout, and great dialogue that got us through the conversation scenes. I love that the film was built around a message that’s not the usual underdog story. And how brilliant was that corresponding tagline???

Best Animated Film – Toy Story 3. *cough* Wow, I didn’t see that one coming… Yes, it was well deserved, though. I’ll give them extra points for making a part three that was just as fantastic as the first two. Does anyone want to bet that they’ll win the Oscar???

Speaking of extra points, props to all of the presenters for being class acts and not running over to pummel Gervais for his…intros. And congratulations to Robert De Niro for the Lifetime Achievement Award! I must give the man props for hinting at the truth about what 3D films mean in terms of revenues, especially for doing it at an event like that. It’ll be an interesting year for the Oscars!

Did you know that this year’s Golden Globes host, Ricky Gervais, won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2004 for his performance in the hit British television series, THE OFFICE?

Two years later, in 2006, Steve Carell won the same Golden Globe award for his performance as Ricky Gervais’ counterpart in the American version of THE OFFICE.

Award season officially kicks off tonight as the Hollywood Foreign Press will dish out their Golden Globe trophies to Hollywood’s best. The show starts tonight at 8pm on NBC. Let’s take a stab at predicting some of the awards.

Best Picture (Drama) – The Social Network – while I think Inception was better than The Social Network, of course I have to guess that the ‘Facebook’ movie is going to win this award. It has simply cleaned up the at the guild awards (DGA, WGA) and the recent Critics Choice ceremony. Who are we kidding here…The Social Network is a lock.

Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) – The Kids Are All Right is a certain winner here. If I were a betting man, this is the one bet I’d make. This is pretty much the only movie worthy of getting a nomination for the category. All the others have no business being at the party.

Best Actor (Drama) – Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) – I haven’t seen this film yet, but Firth has been dominating thus far at the award ceremonies. I think the only other person who has a shot is James Franco. The other 3 don’t need to prepare a thank you speech. Hey, I could be wrong, but Firth is my prediction.

Best Actress (Drama) – Natalie Portman (Black Swan)- Portman will win this one. She was magnificent in Black Swan and will be a strong favorite to win her first Oscar.

Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) – I simply hate this award. Ever seen Robert Downey Jr. won for Sherlock Holmes last year, I think this award means nothing. The only good thing about it is that it is something different than the Oscars. Anyways, even though Johnny Depp has 2 chances of winning here (one for The Tourist and one for Alice in Wonderland), I think Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version) will take home the prize.

Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) – Julianne Moore will win here for her role in The Kids Are All Right.

Best Supporting Actor – Christian Bale might as well be handed the trophy right now. He is certainly going to win here. His role as Dick Ecklund in ‘The Fighter’ was one of the best performances of the year, and definitely my favorite. I hope he has a speech prepared.

Best Supporting Actress – Melissa Leo is my call to win for her role as Mark Wahlberg’s on-screen mother in ‘The Fighter’. She gave an incredible performance. Like Bale, I hope you prepared your speech. You are walking away with a trophy tonight

Best Director – David Fincher (The Social Network) will likely take home this award but I would feel better about it if David O. Russell (The Fighter) got it. My prediction is Fincher but O. Russell is the guy I’ll be rooting for. Also, I like that Nolan (Inception) is up for the award. It’s about time a great Summer movie got to hang during awards season.

Best Screenplay – Inception will win here. If it doesn’t, The Social Network will. However, I think the Hollywood Foreign Press will honor the greatness of Inception with this award. Come on, if you’re going to give it something it might as well be for writing. That screenplay was mesmerizing.

What are you predictions?
