It wracked up close to $53M and while that is impressive for most films on an opening weekend, with an estimated budget of $200M (and that’s not even including marketing costs!) I’d say this is a pretty disappointing figure.

In second place was last week’s number 1 movie ‘Super 8′ taking in $21.3M while the other new release this weekend, Jim Carrey’s ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ came in 3rd place with only $18M in total. My guess is releasing a kid themed movie wasn’t the best idea during Father’s Day weekend as most fathers would rather be having a barbecue than heading to the movies. Rounding out the top 5 is ‘X-Men: First Class’ in 4th place with $11.5M and The Hangover, Part II in 5th place with $9.6M. It should also be noted that ‘The Hangover, Part II’ has made $232.7M in total since its release making it the highest grossing movie of the year so far. I guess it should come as no surprise then that the ‘The Hangover, Part III’ is already in the works.

Next weekend sees the release of two pretty big summer movies, ‘Cars 2′ and ‘Bad Teacher.’ If I had to guess I’d say ‘Cars 2′ will take the number 1 spot (family/children films always seem to win the weekend) and “Bad Teacher’ will end up with a moderate box office intake at number 3.

Take a look at the complete box office results for the top ten movies according to studio estimates on Sunday…

1. Green Lanter…$52.7M

2. Super 8…$21.3M

3. Mr. Popper’s Penguins…$18.2M

8. Pirates of the Caribbean…$6.2M

9. Midnight in Paris…$5.2M

10. Judy Moody…$2.2M

Happy Father’s Day Banters!

I don’t know why it’s taken this long for me to voice my opinion about this, but what’s up with the Three Stooges movie?

This comes on recent news that Jennifer Hudson has been cast as the ‘good’ nun? Boo. Sure, the other two nuns are Larry David and Jane Lynch, but still. Jennifer Hudson? I guess she’ll be the straight (wo)man. Sophia Vergara will also have a part in the film. Speaking of weird casting:

Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Will Sasso are playing Larry, Moe, and Curly, respectively. Hmm. I don’t know. Give up? I think maybe give up. Why? Because this film was in a whole different league a couple years ago. Instead, it included Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio del Toro as Moe, and Jim Carrey as Curly. THAT is a movie people would want to see. Because Hollywood feels a deep obligation to remake everything forever and ever, this cast would have been a legitimate tribute. Stars of today stepping into the shoes of the most famous slapstick comedians of all time. Then those guys dropped out. Damn! “Now what?” is what I’m sure everyone was thinking.

Maybe some young funny men? Andy Samberg as Larry? Great! Johnny Knoxville as Moe? Interesting, sure. Shane Jacobson as Curly? No idea who that is but okay. The aim was clearly aimed at a much younger demographic but could work. Kids who know Samberg and Knoxville enjoy their humor. Let’s be honest, Knoxville is extremely familiar with violent, painful slapstick. Taking these guys instead of three actors with $20 million plus salaries could be a better, cheaper option. Perfect? Not perfect.

Now were left with this: Not Will from Will & Grace, a guy who was once on 24, and someone from MADtv.

“What’s MADtv?” –anyone under thirty

I forgot to mention it’s the Farrelly brothers. Take your minute to groan.

UUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH.

But, while I prefer most of my post 2000 movies to be Farrelly free, the Three Stooges—in all it’s slapstick glory—is the perfect movie for them. Keeping it to a PG rating? Haha. Good one and good luck.

But if you don't want to waste nine bucks, the movie misses the mark by that much.

For those of you who were excited for A Christmas Carol when you saw the giant cut-out of Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge at your local marquee, the reviews for the movie probably don’t mean diddly-squat to you. Most of the people who want to see this are families and kids, who aren’t influenced at all by what critics think of a movie.

All Hat buy

High Noon film

But for those of you like me you do care what critics think, not wanting to spend your $9 (or $11, good God) on a movie that stinks. I read a few early reviews for A Christmas Carol previously this week and found that most of them were, shockingly, positive. You’d think that a movie where Jim Carrey was half a dozen characters in a Disney movie from the guy who did what I found to be the creepy Polar Express would be terrible. And for the most part, you’re probably right. It really depends on whether you dig this sort of thing or not. Make what you will of the reviews:

“The movie may be yet another retelling of an iconic story, but visually it is often quite breathtaking.” –Mary F. Pols, MSN Movies The Fly II movie Colour Me Kubrick: A True…ish Story ipod

“You don’t identify with Scrooge at any point, nor is blatant fakery scary. Picture The Seventh Seal with sock puppets.” –Kyle Smith, New York Post download The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep dvd

“Does this entertainment achieve a timelessness beyond its exquisite source material? Not even. Yet there’s pleasure to be had and relief in feeling the filmmakers didn’t Scrooge it up either.” –Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post

Landspeed ipod

Owning Mahowny trailer

The Bear buy

“The good news about A Christmas Carol, then, is that Dickens’ story — the pure power of it, the grace and gentleness, the sensibility and sentiment of it — cannot be drowned or destroyed no matter how many technicians and dollars are thrown at it.” – James Rocchi, Redbox

Coyote Ugly hd 68 Fresh reviews and 52 Rotten ones on Rotten Tomatoes average out a mediocre 57% of critics enjoying it. Hopefully the movie will be as divided, thus as debatable, as Where The Wild Things Are Wind trailer . I’m going to go with an open mind when I see Carol in theaters, and expect a family Christmas story that’s slightly better than The Polar Express. However according to critics, the movie misses the mark by that much.
