Peter Jackson brings us all back to Middle Earth on December 14th, 2012. At that time it will be 11 years since the release date of The Fellowship of the Ring. In fact, two days ago (December 19th) was the 10 year anniversary of the Fellowship’s release and when Peter Jackson put Middle Earth on the big screen. Check out the trailer below to get a glimpse of the anticipated return to Tolkien’s world in THE HOBBIT.

The Hobbit is in fact a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and will be broken up into two films.

The Adventures of Tintin was big this weekend. Really big.

…in Europe.

I’m not trying to take anything away from the film at all; I want to clarify that from the start. I, like the rest of the world, want to make sure Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are able to stay successful. I’m worried about them. But, really, I don’t want motion capture animation to disappear.

The biggest accomplishment here is that the stop motion animation technique was such a success. Woo, animation. You get one point. Because after Mars Needs Moms earlier this year, the fate of the device was not looking so good to say the least. This was mainly due to Disney pulling the plug on their division. But also, does Disney need Pixar and another animation studio…? Greedy, greedy.

But I can’t say that this is necessarily a good thing for the practice. Not because I hate motion capture. Not because I don’t think Spielberg’s still got it. It’s because Tintin is time tested in Europe.

Why is that a problem? It’s not. It’s good for the movie’s international appeal. Tintin doesn’t come out until around Christmas in the states, which is really the perfect time for it. Family friendly movies do great around the holidays to counter balance the award focused depressing movies. But, it doesn’t have the same appeal that it would in Europe. Here, it is another re-imagination of a cartoon that is much less beloved. And, really, much less known, especially to the demographic that it’s aimed at.

When push comes to shove, Spielberg and Jackson’s seal of approval should catapult this into American success as well. So, fret not. Neither of them will be homeless come this time next year. But don’t expect this to save the future of stop motion.

The Adventures of Tintin features the vocal talents of Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, and Andy Serkis (who you may know from playing motion captured Gollum or Caesar from this summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes.)

Sean Bean, (Ned Stark on HBO’s GAME OF THRONES and Boromir from the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy), will once again take up a character that bears a sword. This time he joins the cast, as the King, in the much anticipated film Snow White. Now he can grab his crown in addition to a sword. Maybe even a scepter if he is lucky.

I really like Bean in these roles. Somehow his roles always end up with his character’s death at a pivotal moment. Maybe he’ll make it through this time. Who Knows?

Check out the official press release from Relativity below.

Bean Reigns as Snow White King

The Seven Dwarfs are being played by Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants), Jordan Prentice (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Danny Woodburn (Watchmen), Sebastian Saraceno (Bedtime Stories), Ronald Lee Clark (Epic Movie), Martin Klebba (Pirates of the Caribbean series) and Joey Gnoffo (The Benchwarmers).

It is December, the month during which each film of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy was released. The films are epic and there are tons of moments I would label “BADASS,” but if I had to choose just one, it would have to be the climactic moment in the last installment, The Return of the King.

It is the ultimate battle and The Witch King, the general of Sauron’s army, has landed in the middle of the battlefield. King Theoden is down and innocent Eowyn leaps in to protect her uncle. This scene is the ultimate underdog moment, for when it seems that Witch King is about to end Eowyn’s life, little Merry steps in for his moment of glory, followed by Eowyn’s. Now, who says girls can’t fight? Or stab evil Nazguls that first, smash your only tool of defense, cause you to drop your only weapon, then lift you by your neck, calling you a fool, and finally, claim no one, specifically no man, can kill them? And then she removes her helmet (BADASS) and says the bone-chilling line that made everyone in the theater clap and cheer like crazy: “I am no man.” BAM! That scene alone was a movie in itself, having a steady build, then a climax where we question if she’ll even make it, and lastly, the moment of triumph and the great satisfaction of knowing she kicked ass!

If you’ve been inspired to feel the chills again, watch it here!

An interesting look at the director behind the new film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole will be released in theaters this Friday. My first thought after watching the trailer was “prettttty”. My second thought was that the film’s creators really know how to portray the “underdog (well, in this case, owl)-on-an-epic-journey” tone. Whoever would have thought that the director of 300, Watchmen, and Dawn of the Dead would be able to recreate The Lord of the Rings? …But for young children…And with fluffy owls… And pretty shots of sunrays seeping through the clouds… Even Hugo Weaving (Elrond) is in the film…

The film will be Zack Snyder’s first non-R rated film. And yes, this is the same director who turned down S.W.A.T. because it would not be rated R. I’m just wondering if the intense battle scenes—intense battle scenes are allowed in PG films, right?—will have portions where the villain’s attack is suddenly played in slow motion and the adorable victim/owl’s head will fill the screen as it turns left from the impact, saliva slowly oozing out from his beak, some feathers blowing in the background, shaken loose by the hit.

Nevertheless, perhaps this odd combination will work in the film’s favor. The film’s distributor, Warner Bros., was also responsible for the Harry Potter films. And although Legend of the Guardians may not have the same literary backing as it’s cousins, the Potters 1-6, we will soon find out if they share the same gene for success.

Check out the trailer below

The greatest cinematic achievement in film history, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, is anything but old news. The films came to screen starting in the 2001 Christmas holiday season with “The Fellowship of The Ring,” and continued the following two holiday seasons with the second and third installments “The Two Towers” and “The Return of The King.” While the production of these films involved many well recognized people, one of its finest contributors is actually not as well known. Howard Shore, the man behind the music for all three movies, is responsible for creating one of the finest scores in film history. His work has won several Oscars and has sold millions of CD’s. Well now you can hear it live.

in New York City. The event will be a live performance of the score in sync with the showing of the film. So there will be a big screen on stage playing the film, with a live orchestra playing the score. For those Lord of The Rings fans, this is another incredible opportunity to experience the film in a brand new way. When we thought all this stuff was old news, they bring back the trilogy in a whole new light. In fact, live score performances like this are going on worldwide for The Two Towers and The Return of The King. To buy tickets click this link.

Scores can make a great movie. We all know they are an incredibly important part of a film. They make movies memorable and often timeless. The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, Jaws, ET, Pirates of The Caribbean, Gladiator and many more had scores that we all remember. The music of these films made them better. And now we have the unique opportunity to see something like this live.
