Green Zone is Bourne 4.0

Matt Damon, you are a talented actor with a very dynamic on-screen range. We have seen you as a bad-ass in the Bourne’s, a love interest in Good Will Hunting, a punk in School Ties, a funny crook in The Ocean’s, an athlete in Invictus, and a villain in The Talented Mr Ripley and The Departed.  However, of late, you continue to play the same exact role. Whenever you star in a movie by yourself, you play an employee of the military who is on a mission to expose corruption.   It seems you are some personal mission to show your discontent with the US Government.  This role is getting old.

“Green Zone,” Matt Damon’s new movie, comes out next Friday March 12th, and is directed by Paul Greengrass.  Greengrass also directed the second and third installments of the Bourne series.   Here is the IMDB plot of the movie – “Discovering covert and faulty intelligence causes a U.S. Army officer to go rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region.” We all have seen the trailer for this movie. It looks exactly the same as every other Bourne movie. Yet this time, it’s not a Bourne movie.

I don’t know why but this movie is just getting under my skin. Watching the trailer has me asking myself a ton of questions that I don’t know the answer to. Why is Matt Damon doing this movie? Why is he playing the same role? Why do him and Greengrass feel obligated to do military thrillers about the corruption of the government?

What is going on here? Both Greengrass and Damon have overly milked this genre.  Damon’s personal mission to show his discontent with the US Government is getting annoying.  While of course I do not condone US Government corruption, I just feel Matt Damon’s personal mission is old.

It’s like he feels personally obligated to do this. As fans of your movies, we understand you have a thing against the US Government. Your insistence on continuing to hammer home your message is old. You don’t need to tell us anymore.  If I am wrong here and you aren’t on a mission than I apologize, but this role is old nonetheless.  I hope to see if you different roles in the future.

Are you seeing Green Zone on next Friday?

Snap Review of Invictus

Source: CBS News

Invictus starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman directed by Clint Eastwood, is a tailing story about a country trying to unite as one.  Nelson Mandela (Freeman) is released from prison after 27 years locked behind bars, and soon after finds himself elected as President of South Africa.  The movie deals with the racial tension behind the poor black majority and the wealthy white minority as the country is looking for a unified presence.  The way a lot of problems are solved, sports once again is the unifying reason for hope and change.

Francois Pienaar is the captain of the South African Rugby team and Mandela consoles in the captain and builds a relationship with him, looking to him and the sport to hopefully help reunite the country.  The World Cup of Rugby hosted in South Africa in 1995 is the way to do that, and through inspriation, Pienaar pushes his team to excellence to help lead the team to victory.

The movie is a solid Eastwood production and is very well acted by both Freeman and Damon.  The movie although quality, lacks greatness.  It seems Eastwood got lazy at times and left out information that would have led to the story.  There are multiple points in the movie where the scenes just seem off for a bit, something a casual viewer may not notice or care about, but mistakes that prevent the movie from being a real Oscar contender.  And the fact that it’s Rugby, makes it difficult to relate on for a sport that is very unknown in the country.

This is my snap video review of Invictus.

Snap Review of The Informant!

Matt Damon plays Marc Whitacre, the quirky President of Archer Daniels Midland, in the  latest Steven Soderbergh film The Informant!.  Whitacre has aspirations to climb the corporate ladder all the way to top yet thinks blowing the whistle on the company’s global price fixing scheme will catapult this mission. Boy was he in for treat.   Based on true events, The Informant! is a movie that I consider just ‘ok.’ I was expecting a bit more from this movie.

Well now that you know the movie is based on true events, you can ruin the entire plot by wikipedia’ing Whitacre’s life story. I recommend not doing that because it will take away from a lot of the spontaneous humor found in this movie. However, Whitacre is such a bizarre guy, that the movie drags on a bit too long.  From watching the trailer, I was expecting a lot more laugh-out-loud humor.  Most of that humor is in the trailer itself, leaving the film devoid of the comedic element that would have made the movie a lot better.

However, Damon does play Whitacre extremely well.  I typically measure performances based on whether an actor makes you forget who is acting and how well he/she becomes the character. Thus, when looking at the screen you only see the character.   Damon succeeds here.  I did not know anything about the story nor did I know anything about Whitacre, but I from watching Damon, I can imagine how ridiculous a person Whitacre really was. Also, Damon put on at least 20lbs of fat for this film. We even get to see the beer belly. That’s dedication.

I’ve heard people discussing potential Oscar nominations for this film. I’m here to say this film is not deserving.  If anything, Damon could be considered for his performance, but that’s it.  While Soderbergh is a genius, it did not take an Oscar worthy performance to complete this film.  Sure, it was well directed as Soderbergh was able to tell the story without explicitly telling you what was going on, but that does not mean it should be nominated.

Love Happens - need I even give the plot line. This is your chick flick movie about a guy who is looking for love and women who is going to give it to him. Harvey Dent, I mean Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston star.

Jennifer’s Body – this is the weekly horror flick starring Megan Fox. She looks hot, but the movie doesn’t. Tacky horror fans and middle school guys will flock to theaters for either blood or Fox. Will you?

Matt Damon gives us the latest details about Bourne 4

Dangerous Liaisons psp The Bourne series starring Matt Damon has been a hit ever since the first movie came out back in 2002.  The money making franchise Asylum buy Return to Sender hd Ring Around the Rosie ipod that is based off the Robert Ludlum series of the same character is about Jason Bourne who is a spy who loses all his memory but slowly has it come back to him as he sets out on these missions.

Friends with Money divx

Matt Damon specifically stated there would not be a 4th installment to the series, but like anything else, money talks and he declared he was on board for the next sequel to the enjoyment of fans.  For months Paul Greengrass the director and Matt Damon have said that they have a story in place but no script and that “the film is being worked on.”

At the press conference for his new movie The Informat, Damon was asked about the next Bourne movie

download Hooligans movie

Here is an excerpt from the interview.

On the likelihood of filming Bourne 4:

“We love the character and we would love to do another one…but we are really serious about trying to get the story and the script right because the only thing more disappointing than not having another one of these movies is, for us or for movie fans is would be to make one that isn’t good. Because everyone would say, “they should have quit after three”. And we’d feel that way too.”

On whether or not he’s read any of the scripts for Bourne 4:

The Haunting movie

“Not yet…He [Paul Greengrass] hasn’t had a break literally since he did “The Bourne Supremacy” – which is six years ago now. [After his break] he said he’d come to New York and we’d sit down and we’d talk seriously about it.

It sounds dicey right now and although it would make a lot of money based off the fun and brand of the franchise but it sounds like Damon just doesn’t want to do another movie, but a quality one.

It’s funny to see Damon be such a hypocrite both ways on this.  First stating he would not do another sequel only to run back for the millions, now defending only a quality movie and won’t do one unless he feels fit.  Kind of seems like he’s a 5 yr old baby or the ex-girlfriend who wants the best of both worlds and can’t get it.  It’s either that or some cheap marketing ploy to pretend like he won’t budge only to find out a month later that they have the perfect script and everything is golden again.  Either way it’s more material for Jimmy Kimmel to bust him on.

What are your thoughts on Bourne 4?
