It should come as no surprise that the amazingly talented (and interesting) Johnny Depp will star as Thedor Geisel, more popularly known as Dr. Seuss, who was a great talent (and let’s face it, also “interesting”). However, Johnny will also join the crew as a producer this time. This is not surprising either-Depp is already producing three of his upcoming films (The Rum Diary, Hugo, and Dark Shadows). Depp has always had amazing (there is no better word to describe him, really) taste in films, and I have always trusted his work because we know that he really cares about acting and filmmaking as an art, not just a means of profit. Point being, I can’t wait to see how the biopic turns out.

“Seuss began his career in the late 1920s as a magazine illustrator, then shifted to drawing ads for companies including General Electric and NBC during the Great Depression, before shifting to political cartoons during World War II and, finally, turning his focus to children’s books in the 1950s. Among his first efforts was ‘Horton,’ as well as 1957′s ‘Cat in the Hat’ and ‘Grinch.’ Geisel died of throat cancer in September 1991 at the age of 87.”

The question is who will direct it? Not to sound cliche, but I think this sort of thing is perfect for Tim Burton. He gets my vote.

Who would you like to see direct a film on the late Dr. Seuss?

As of October 5th, Disney’s The Lion King in 3D has grossed a total of $80,908,355 domestically. Seeing the success of their first 3D re-release, Disney now plans to re-release a couple more of their animated features in 3D in the coming years. Here is the line-up:

January 13th 2012 – Beauty and the Beast

September 14th 2012 – Finding Nemo

January 18th 2013 – Monsters, Inc.

September 14th 2013 – Little Mermaid

It’s interesting to note that the four expected films were some of the best that Disney ever released. I guess the company is leaving no room for box office disappointment. This gives me reason to believe that Little Mermaid will indeed be the last Disney re-release. But you never know. Again, I would be thrilled to experience such films on the big screen, but I hope these have more to offer in 3D than The Lion King did. Good times have returned for the Walt Disney company.

Will you all be heading over to the theater for the re-releases?

This year, the New York International Children’s Film Festival will premiere the newest animated feature by renowned animator, Michel Ocelot–Tales of the Night or Les Contes de la Nuit on October 15 and 16 at New York City’s IFC Film Center. Ocelot has animated many fairy tales, including Kirikou and the Sorceress, Princes and Princesses, and Azur & Asmar: The Princes’ Quest. Tales of the Night was previously a 26 minute TV special that Ocelot made in 1992, but now, it has become an 84 minute feature. The style of the film, although in 3D, is silhouette animation, using black silhouetted characters set off against a lit background.

An avid fan of fairy tales and animation, I am extremely excited for this film. Just look at how beautiful the colors are…

Antonio Banderas will return as the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek spin off of the same title, Puss in Boots. Like with any other project by Dreamworks, this too has a cast full of huge stars playing the voices of Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, and more: Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, and Billy Bob Thornton. The film will tell the story of Puss in Boots’ adventures before he joined forces with Shrek.

I just love how they added quirks to his personality based on the fact that he’s a cat. Shrek has been a great success for Dreamworks in the past years. Let’s hope Puss in Boots will deliver as well this fall!

LAIKA, the animation studio behind the 2009 film Coraline, has optioned to adapt Wildwood, a children’s novel by the lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists, Colin Meloy, into a film. Like Coraline, the film will be a stop-motion feature. Wildwood is actually part of a series about a girl named Prue McKeel, who, with the help of her friend, Curtis, must journey to the Impassible Wilderness to rescue her younger brother from his abductors. The only trouble is, no one who has ever ventured into the Impassible Wilderness,  an enchanted forest on the edge of the city, has come out alive.

Originally, Meloy was certain that he would never allow a production company to buy the movie rights to his book. But when LAIKA came knocking, there was no turning them down. “There is no doubt in my mind that they will come to this story with the passion, imagination and general awesomeness required to make this book into a truly beautiful animated film,” says Meloy on why he is willing to trust LAIKA with his work.

The book was illustrated by award winning artist, Carson Ellis. You can check out his illustrations in the book trailer below!

Synopsis:

Today, practically every movie is in 3D and uses special effects, so one of the coolest things to know is that the skydivers in the third Transformers movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon (in theaters June 29), are 100% real. Director Michael Bay, who also directed the previous two Transformer films, first saw the jumping team on “60 Minutes” and decided to put them in the film. Even more cool than the fact that no CGI was needed? This was the first time the team ever did their jumps in an urban environment, maneuvering around the buildings of Chicago. I’m psyched to see how this turns out on the silver screen! Check out a behind the scenes clip below!
