Snap Review of Alice in Wonderland (2010)

If I could grade a director on effort alone, Tim Burton would have gotten a much higher rating from me on this. Alice in Wonderland, the 2010 imagining of Lewis Carroll’s novels, is brimming with so much excess everything at times it’s uncomfortable to watch.
Alice is 19-years-old, thirteen years after she first fell down the rabbit hole as a little kid. Summoned by the original film’s gang-bang cast of character, Alice must defeat the evil Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter, hilariously imperialistic) from her reign over the magical kingdom.
Oddly enough, it’s the little things that make the movie feel epic. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter was an expected but triumphant role for Burton’s go-to guy, and newcomer Mia Wasikowska in the title role is top-notch. However way too many characters are introduced in the movie’s 90-minute time frame, and are left wandering around with nothing at all to do. That’s not the Burton I know; the adaptation-happy Burton never sacrifices a good story to include all of the original’s characters. Look how well he made Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
Burton reportedly had a $100 million budget for his take on Wonderland. (Or as this movie stupidly calls it “Underland”, blaming a seven-year-old’s misunderstanding of the world’s original name.) He goes nothing short of crazy with that amount of money, painting every aspect with gross amounts of color and random zany paraphernalia. All of it wildly unnecessary.
Leading to a conclusion that reminded me of something out of Chronicles of Narnia, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is no threat to the original. Yet I still couldn’t bring myself to hate it. It’s not one of Burton’s better works, although the great acting and mesmerizing supporting players we’ve come to love make it that much easier to digest.

3/5 stars.

Snap Review of “A Prophet (Un prophète)”

“What are you, some kind of a prophet or something?” I honestly believe that this movie is. A Prophet (or if you want to get really foreign on me, “Un prophete”) is an immaculate gangster conquest. The first in-theater film of 2010 I can sincerely say to rush out the door and see as soon as you possibly can.
A Prophet is an accidental mafia portrayal through the eyes of Malik, an Arab man sent to a French prison where he works as drug runner for a Corsican boss. It’s only later in this late Christmas present where things get interesting. Malik soon faces summons to assassinate, to plot against the dangerous men who got him involved in this business in the first place, and even facing the fact of obliviously coming into his own. It’s as painful as it is a blast following Malik, played by an amazing Tahar Rahim, as his perception of life clears from already-cloudy to murky, though the film makes it seem he’s found a dynasty of sunlight.
A perfect bandit flick among the likes of Goodfellas, and I say this with the utmost respect. I’ve never before compared any movie to Scorsese’s kingpin tycoon, however A Prophet feels so completely epic (and clocking in at around two-and-a-half hours you could see why I feel this way) its meaning can be broken down into anything from antiquity lessons to personal emotional casts.
Where director Jacques Audiard gets it right is by turning A Prophet not into a boring by-the-book film version of a history seminar but a no-holds-barred thespian entourage that will leave you feeling renewed.
Whenever a character overcomes a certain obstacle you as an experienced moviegoer know that something, someone, is always above watching over them, waiting to strike. And the movie takes past crime dramas into consideration and bottles its knowledge up to unleash a fiery monster of gorgeous cinematography, crazed directing, and wonderful acting.
A Prophet is an amazing look into prison gangs and an invested youngster’s rise to the top of a band of thieves with dark hidden secrets too big for a single movie to handle. Yet A Prophet is nearly able to, and still come out as if nothing had ever happened. Because maybe nothing really did.

Five out of five stars.

Snap Review of “The Crazies (2010)”

The first great B-movie of the new year. The Crazies is a gory joyride that wholly satisfies nearly every part of me that was craving a good time.
I loved George A. Romero’s 1973 anti-government horror classic, but it never really had enough time to ever come across as scary. However with director Breck Eisner’s reboot he makes that his top priority. Using the low funds I’m sure he had to work with, Eisner uses his camera to capture every which way to make this the cheesy fun I was hoping for.
The 2010 Crazies is basically about the same thing as Romero’s was: a manifested government creates a lethal toxin that accidentally spreads like wildfire in an Iowa town. Of course the original took place in Pennsylvania, but I won’t hold that against it. If you pick apart a movie like this you’re bound to find numerous reasons not to love it.
Timothy Olyphant seems to be my acting god when I’m looking for a guilty pleasure movie. He starred in another garbage thriller last summer that I enjoyed, A Perfect Getaway. I won’t mention a word about his performance in this movie because to be honest I don’t really care. I mean, Danielle Panabaker is in a movie entitled “The Crazies”. You think I’m going to start an Oscar campaign for any of the people in this?
All in all The Crazies does everything I wanted it to do. It doesn’t alter the original too badly, it never for a second takes itself too seriously, and above all it just has fun. From a shear entertainment standpoint, The Crazies delivers. And isn’t that what you go to the movie for, to be entertained?

3.5 out of five stars.

Snap Review of It’s Complicated

Hey guys. I saw Nancy Meyers’s latest It’s Complicated last night and here’s my review:

A charming and thoroughly funny romantic comedy.

Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep have great chemistry together. Baldwin is a hoot, and though Meryl Streep isn’t in top-form as she usually is, she’s good enough. Granted this isn’t the movie she should win the Oscar for (that would be Julie & Julia), her constant giggling and facial expressions is enough to get the job done.

Writer-director Nancy Meyers obviously has a fetish for rich society, and that’s exactly why the romantic aspect to the movie doesn’t work for the most part. Universal should have marketed the movie as a regular comedy, in hopes of succumbing to more money box office-wise.

Steve Martin isn’t used to the best of his abilities, and the ending feels a bit too dragged out. Yet a delightful performance from Alec Baldwin and a decent amount of one-liners in the dialogue help It’s Complicated be the guilty pleasure that Meyers’ other films are. It’s flawed, sure, but you’ll feel better in saying you saw it rather than the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. And just maybe have some fun along the way.

3 /5 stars.

Snap Review of Avatar

Hey everyone! Yesterday was the day we’ve been waiting for for 12 years: the release of James Cameron’s Avatar. I saw it last night in IMAX 3D, and here’s my review-

A brilliantly told sci-fi epic. James Cameron’s Avatar is a luxuriant masterpiece to be remembered for decades to come. Cameron creates another world entitled Pandora (which turns out not to be based on the iPhone radio app), and he has as much fun with it as he possibly can.

Sam Worthington isn’t too shabby, and Zoe Saldana is pretty great, but to be honest the acting doesn’t matter all that much. Cameron is clearly the star of his own groundbreaking 3D account, and he shines more than ever.

Emotionally-charged and somehow not up its own ass with “messages”, Avatar is history in the making. For all those who weren’t around for Star Wars or Terminator, the King of the World has something shiny wrapped under the tree for you this Christmas. And long live the King.

4.5 out of five stars.

Snap Review of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon"

Hey everyone. Last night I waited in line for 40 minutes to see The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and here’s my review of it.

Vile trash. What sucks is that New Moon, the follow-up to Catherine Hardwicke’s tremendously disappointing Twilight, is sure to shatter all the box office records that The Dark Knight so rightly deserves.

In the stupidly titled The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Edward leaves Bella for some reason that I really don’t care to know, and werewolf Jacob (who for some reason is shirtless and wearing jean shorts throughout the entire movie) is there to comfort her.

Chris Weitz’s career has plummeted from directing American Pie to this tween garbage. The Twilight Saga: New Moon is nothing more than an excuse for 11-year-old girls (and their mothers, in my theater-going experience) to compete in screaming matches whenever Jacob or Edward (who’s played by Robert Pattinson, the only good actor in this soft core porn-like film) comes on the screen.

From the an asinine shirtless werewolf Native American clan to Stephanie Meyer’s completely screwed up perception of vampires, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” is more of the exact same. And expect a lot more of it in the coming years.

My rating: TWO OUT OF FIVE STARS.

Snap Review of 2012

Hey everybody. Last night I saw the new Roland Emmerich-helmed film 2012. Here’s my review: Extract movie download

It’s a shame that a movie that for one hour completely caught me off guard and had me actually enjoying its CG destruction could have such a slow second half. The next two hours (that’s right; it’s nearly three hours, folks) drag the same thing out for what seems like forever.

House of Wax hd The Legend of Lucy Keyes Doc Hollywood download
John Cusack and Amanda Peet take turns in screaming at ocean waves, in sub-par performances. Woody Harrelson, who I had no idea was starring in 2012 until the moment his scruffy bearded persona graced the screen, is hilarious, however, as a Yellowstone National Park-based radio show host who constantly preaches that “the end is nigh!” Easily the best character in 2012, and one who didn’t have nearly enough screen time.

Reality Bites movie

Danny Glover is a decent Mr. President, but nothing feels very valuable in 2012. If you enjoy destruction and random silent bright scenes (you’ll see what I mean if you see the movie), then 2012 is the movie for you. For everyone else, stick the $9 back in your pocket.

Gentlemen Broncos is Not Quite What It Seems

I, like a lot of you, absolutely loved Napoleon Dynamite’s über-nerdiness. I even liked Nacho Libre, not as much, but still a rather crazy kids flick. The key name in these movies is Jared Hess, who directed and co-wrote both Libre Undercover Brother dvdrip The House Bunny trailer and Dynamite with his wife Jerusha.

A few months ago (if you cared to notice), the trailer for Gentlemen Broncos, the next film by the duo, was released. In short, I Who Killed Doc Robbin ipod loved it! I mean, a movie about a teen’s story being stolen by a famous sci-fi writer? One of the most promising plots I’ve heard this year!

What I knew wouldn’t be another Napoleon Dynamite

download Miss March (aka Playboys) dvd

has turned out to be nothing but schmaltz this weekend, as Gentlemen Broncos is being pooh-poohed by critics. Here are some reviews:

  • “Hess wrote and directed “Dynamite,” and here’s proof we shouldn’t have rewarded him. The hollow Broncos is even more cruelly disdainful, designed primarily to scorn the pathetic lives within.” –Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

  • “The audience may have bought the act in Napoleon Dynamite. But this time, the act bombs.”  –Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
  • “The movie’s a chaotic, infuriating mess that will challenge the most-devoted of the Napoleon Dynamite faithful.” –David Germain, Associated Press
    Sumuru film

Even one of my favorite critics on the web, Katey Rich, hated on it.

  • “The Hesses could not be bothered to separate the wheat from the chaff, presenting a movie that’s a jumble of ideas and pastiches, none of them paying off.” –Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

So it looks like the only other wide release this weekend aside from Michael Jackson’s This Is It (which is amazing, by the way) is a bomb. Something that I’d never expect from the two Hess’s that made one of my favorite movies of all time. I’ll still be seeing this one for myself, although it looks like Broncos science-fiction won’t go down as easy as Dynamite’s tater tots did.

Hey everyone, it’s Nick. I saw Jennifer’s Body on Friday, and I thought that it was very good. Diablo Cody’s witty script plays perfectly with Amanda Seyfried; the zingy one-liners spoken by her and Megan Fox are hilarious. Some may say that because of Megan Fox’s starring in Body, you can immediately write it off as a good movie. She is mediocre, however the story doesn’t really follow her all that much. It’s more about Needy, Seyfried’s character in the film. I recommend you check this out if you loved Juno

Halloween 2 is the second movie written and directed by Rob Zombie Mostly Ghostly ipod as he once again brings back and remakes the horror movie classic.  Continuing the movie from where we left off from the first one, we learn that Michael Myers escapes when being taken to the hospital after we initially thought he was killed. Trying to bring his family together in the afterlife, he goes on a killing spree to find his one remaining sister.  This movie has the blood and gore you would expect from a Rob Zombie horror film and fans of the genre and series will eat it up and want more.  The movie is graphic all the way throughout the movie and twisted in more ways than in the original series.  Rob Zombie takes a new approach and into the head of Michael Myers and his twisted brain and thought process with scenes of chaos for his actions and love for his mother he lost at a young age who in his mind is telling him to reunite the family which leads to the bloody rage.  It takes on a new level to the horror classic and is dives deeper into the mind of the killer.  Halloween 2 is fun for horror fans and better than the first remake movie.  Michael Myers fans will be pleased.
