Well, Banterers, it’s that time of year again. Halloween time, that is! This is a most special holiday for any movie lover since so many good movies revolve around or are inspired by this one scary holiday (ahem). So to commemorate this very special day, I have decided to do a themed “Chills Down My Spine” column this week, you know, to be festive and all.

Just to clarify, the chills produced by any Halloween-time film favorite are a little different from the chills regularly discussed in this column. Gone are the inspirational, tear-inducing chills and in their place lie the frightening chills of any good horror movie. Now that that’s been hashed out, let’s proceed, shall we?

So, as many of you are thinking by now I’m sure, I will confirm, I have picked an unconventional film, even for this unconventional post. Griffin Dunne’s 1998 star-studded Practical Magic is not what you would call a traditional horror film. Don’t get me wrong, this Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Diane Wiest, Aidan Quinn, Evan Rachel Wood, and Camilla Belle flick does have its somewhat, could-be, maybe-sorta scary moments. But let’s be real. This is a feel good chick flick in the costume (get it?!) of a scary movie.

Even so, there remain elements of the horror and inexplicable in this movie. For example, the film’s plot revolves around two sister witches– Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally (Sandra Bullock)– living in a small town who try and cover up the fact that Sally has killed and then brought back to life (even more evil than before) one of Gillian’s abusive boyfriends. I mean, this screams scare right?! Well, as scary as any movie that regularly debuts on ABC family could actually be.

One moment, though, that always manages to give me the chills–as well as the burning desire to stay awake long enough for a little reenactment– is the one of midnight margaritas. The scene of the famed (at least in my head) midnight margaritas combines the viewer’s realization that Gillian’s boyfriend is back from the dead (and possessed at that!) with a drunken, magical, dancing, midnight ritual performed by a family of four witches in a dark and scary house. The chills I get, then, are a combination of fear, longing, and down right fun– and all right before the inevitable storm that is Gillian’s possessed ex-boyfriend. It just doesn’t get anymore festive than that!

Natalie Portman Gone from Gravity, Sandra Bullock Cast in Lead Role

Following the great buzz of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, it was rumored lead actress Natalie Portman was offered the role in Gravity, a sci-fi following a space station member after an asteroid crash from Children of Men director Alfonso Cuarón. However Deadline claims Portman has turned the movie down due to scheduling conflicts, and reps for Sandra Bullock confirm her as taking the lead as a mother trying to track her way back to her daughter.

Portman has been fabled as the antagonist in the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, still in pre-production, and her saying no to Gravity could confirm her starring in it. Gravity’s managed to talk with everyone in the character’s age range from Naomi Watts to Blake Lively. (Much of a difference? You bet.) Angelina Jolie has also denied the project, doing so a second time around prior to Portman’s being consulted. Joining Robert Downey Jr. now is officially Bullock, who after an Oscar-winning performance in The Blind Side last year will surely give more reason to discuss Gravity, good and bad.

I’d have loved to see Portman over Bullock in the lead, more so even the talented Naomi Watts. Still, Gravity remains worth hyping due to its being filmed in 3D and Cuarón backing the project. Though really, saying I’d want Portman to have the role is like saying I’d wanted a female in Moon. Come on Bullock; surprise me.

Earlier today the 2009 Razzie Award Winners were announced. Sandra Bullock took home the top, or should I say worst, acting prize of the night by winning Worst Actress of the year for “All About Steve.”

Never has the same actress won the Razzie and Oscar in the same year. Bullock will be at the Oscars tonight and is the front runner for Best Actress. Her portrayal as Leigh-Ann Toughy in “The Blind Side” was one heck of a performance and is likely to get her Oscar gold. I guess all I can say is, Bullock is fairly dynamic if she can put on the best and worst acting performances. Could she make history?

If somebody else has something to say about it, it might be Gabby Sidibe in Precious.

Anyways, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen won for Worst Picture and the Jonas Brothers collectively won Worst Actor for the Jonas Brothers Movie.

Eye of the Beholder ipod

Wow wow wow, what a story. “The Blind Side,” based off the book ‘The Blind Side’ by Michael Lewis, stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and film new comer Quinton Aaron. Aaron plays the main character, Michael Oher, who’s life story is nothing short of incredible. Aaron plays an amazingly likeable character who you will laugh, cry and cheer for. The fact that this story is true is also something to take in.

Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Touhy who is courageous and kind enough to take in a poor, homeless black kid walking the streets of rural Mississippi. The relationship that Touhy and Oher form is as close to mother-son as it can possibly be. It is genuine, touching and inspiring.

I think the most interesting relationship in the movie is between SJ Touhy (played by Jae Head from Hancock) and Oher. SJ has a life size personality trapped in a little person’s body and is hilarious to watch on screen. Head’s comfort in front of the camera is impeccable at such a young age. His character, SJ, is the little brother that you always wanted, but never had. His chemistry on screen with Aaron (Michael Oher) is the most dynamic as the two are both brothers and friends.

The movie was beyond inspiring. I got lucky enough to attend the premiere, which was full of VIP’s including a ton of guys from the Giants, Jets, and NCAA football. In fact, I got up to go to the bathroom mid movie and ran into Aaron in the bathroom. It was just me and him, doing our thing, and talking about the movie – awesome. It was a great red carpet affair.

Napoleon Dynamite ipod This movie could have something to say come Oscar time. Bullock is almost a lock for a nomination, and the adapted screenplay as well.
