Review by Matt Rubinstein, close friend to the TheMovieBanter team.

“The most important thing is what you do now.”-Gina

As I am sure many have said something to that affect before, this statement so aptly holds true for Unknown. Fourth time director Jaume Collet-Serra, House of Wax, seems to get it. His Unknown is a suspenseful action-filled ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Collet-Serra was able to successfully weave in foreshadowing and keep most of it unpredictable, which I consider the most important thing when it comes to a suspense, intellectual thriller.

Dr Martin Harris, played by none other than Mr. Taken, Liam Neeson, does a very nice job playing his role. Harris is a leading researcher in biotech, ends up in a car accident and has his life stolen from him. To get it back he is forced to kick some ass, almost identical to what Neeson did in Taken. If you crossed Jack Bauer and Robert Langdon, you get Martin Harris.

Billed as being an intellectual thriller, Unknown definitely holds through. Yes, I got bored about a quarter of the way through and it came to the point where I literally shouted “do something.” Well, maybe not. But I definitely thought it. Eventually the craziness I had hoped for picked up and failed to stop until the credits rolled; plenty of twists for the twist-loving audience and loads of action for the thrill-seekers.

I thought the rest of the acting was pretty good. January Jones played Neeson’s wife and shows a nice penchant towards being able to carry out an action type role. I would like to see her take on more of this type of role than just being bitchy on Mad Men. Another actor who I thought did a nice job was Frank Langella. His role was small, but very important. It would have been nice if his character had a larger role in the film. His ominous voice just adds an extra dose of spookiness and gives these type of movies that extra oomf.

Between the cinematography and acting, the movie just worked. The particular scene when Harris finally figures it all out – the lights come on in his head – was shot in black and white and had a post-apocalyptic feeling to it. It was this type of uniqueness that made it feel different than traditional suspense thrillers (i.e. The Bourne movies). FYI – I do not mean to diss the Bourne series.

Overall I thought it was very good. If you like not knowing what’s really going on than this is definitely the movie for you. A great popcorn flick that provides plenty of entertainment.

“I didn’t forget everything” – Dr. Martin Harris

SEE IT! (Even the Wynda Sykes wannabe sitting next to me agreed)

Just a couple things I’ve learned from Taken.

Don’t mess with Liam Neeson’s daughter

Liam can take down corruption in the police, an entire Albanian sex trafficking ring, and Muslim mobsters inside of a 96 hour window

Bring money with you to France. Cabs are expensive and you don’t want to share them with strangers.
