I predicted that the Terminator franchise was dying after I saw the movie, and apparently I was right. The Terminator rights are now up for auction.

Nikkie Finke says that every major Hollywood movie studio is interested, including Summit and Media Rights Capital. Either would both probably be good homes for the franchise since both are relatively new production companies. However she says that Sony (who quite frankly hasn’t had a decent hit since Paul Blart: Mall Cop Hannah Montana: The Movie trailer , since Michael Jackson’s This Is It did poorly this weekend domestically) will probably be the highest bidder when the auction opens later this month.

This got me thinking: is the Terminator series finally on its last leg? All of the evidence points to their downfall: the Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles had its last episode after a minor two seasons on April 10^th earlier this year, and Salvation couldn’t manage to top Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian when it opened last May, a problem that none in the series, including the $6.4 million-budgeted 1984 hit The Terminator, have ever had. (All have managed to debut in first place.) Worldwide, Terminator Salvation The Hoax movie download has grossed $371.4 million as of this writing on a $200 million budget, less than Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s $433.4 million total haul with the same budget. And considering ticket price inflation, that’s one hell of a disappointment.

Joss Whedon, creator of the falling Fox series Dollhouse and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, kiddingly bid $10,000 for the rights in addition to printing an open letter saying how he would rename it “Terminator…of the Rings!” among other things. It’s kind of a hard idea to perceive since Terminator was such a big deal at one point in time, but I don’t think that the series is even worth saving 25 years after the original was released.

The consensus from most movie critics and goers alike was that Terminator Salvation was a bust and not only didn’t live up to the buzz and hype, but wasn’t exactly a real “Terminator” movie. buy Curly Sue

I suggested on my video review of Terminator Salvation to wait till this comes to DVD that the lack of story really hurts.

What went wrong?

For starters, John Connor really is not developed. You get more a reprise from Bale and his Dark Knight character than the continuation of the story that developed. The movie title “salvation” isn’t explored

the way I and others imagined because we do not really know who the savior is? We know its Connor but in this movie he is not presented in that light and he is not developed to take charge. We know his commander looks at him as a rebel but that’s it. There is no sense when watching this movie that he is the leader we expect, and that I don’t blame Bale, but the directed McG and writers.

The lack of Terminators may be another thing. There was no essential “bad guy” to the movie the way there was in the others. There was no single Terminator whose purpose and goal was to cause trouble and be the ultimate villain. We get glimpses into different Skynet terminators but no real focus. I believe the lack of a Terminator and villain was a main losing point for this movie.

Most people agree, but is the lack of story just it?

Another point to make is that the whole technology vs. people is getting old. It doesn’t possess the same pizzazz it once had the fact is the audience isn’t afraid or as interested as we once were. Technology is such a big part of our lives now that the fear of Terminators doesn’t exist in viewers the way it did 20 years ago. It was cleverer in how the technology would turn in a movie like “I, Robot” then how it was displayed here. Mausoleum dvdrip

Bottom line there were a lot of things wrong with this flick that needs to be fixed. To be honest I am not even fully sure where they are going to go with the next two movies, but right now I am not excited for them.

The war we have all been waiting for, it’s finally here, Skynet vs. the resistance.  Led by no other than Christian Bale taking the role of John Connor over in a move to keep his A-list status alive, although he seems to still be caught in Dark Knight mode with his raspy voice.  The early reviews of Terminator Salvation

the movie were mixed but but this is Christian Bale and a the beginning of a new Terminator Trilogy in what has already been a blockbuster May 2009 movie lineup.  Does it fit the bill?……Eh.  Bale gets plenty of practice yelling being he screamed at a cameraman non-stop during the filming of the movie one day on set.  The film has all the action, special effects, sound effects that make up a summer blockbuster, but just doesn’t have the substance and story to make it something special.  This is the type of you get what you expect kind of movies so being this is the first of a planned trilogy, I wonder what fans will think and if the studio may even be in trouble.
